Reason for being Orphaned  Stuck in Mud

A female calf estimated to have been born on or about 15th October 1999 and only 1 week old when rescued. This little female elephant was found almost submerged in mud in a waterhole near "Kinna" in Meru National Park. She lay exposed to the sun all day before being found and extracted. When she arrived in the Nursery, one ear was so sun damaged that it was like parchment and despite all our efforts to heal it, the top finally died and fell away. Due to her sun-damaged ears, Kinna will always be very distinctive and easily recognizable even amongst the wild herds when grown.

She is a forceful character, inclined to be bossy, definitely the most precocious of all the female youngsters. Upon meeting Emily and the older Elephants for the first time, whilst the others were nervous and shy, Kinna was not in the least daunted, and rudely punched Emily on the face! Because Kinna is so distinctive, and such an outgoing character, she is a great favourite with everyone.
