Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  November  2017  hile they were walking Zongonloni was being followed by Jasiri suddenly turned and faced him as she had a sense that Jasiri was going to try and grab her tail which is something that she did not want and as such to ensure that he would not have the opportunity to do so she waited until Jasiri had overtaken her and she followed him content in the knowledge that he was head of her and thus could not bother her. (read more...) view

At the mudbath and milk feeding time Lima Lima came running in pushing the babies out of the way as she tried to be the first one to be given her milk bottle. The keepers managed to effectively keep her away, giving Zongoloni the opportunity to arrive at the milk feeding area first with Jasiri, Alamaya and Mwashoti, allowing them to have their milk before the greedier orphans arrived. (read more...)

When the orphans arrived at the waterhole for their milk feed they found some big elephants enjoying the dustbath. The orphans were in awe of their big peers and kept their distance as they were so much smaller than the wild elephants and did not want to risk getting hurt; even Jasiri and Sonje stayed away. (read more...)

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  August  2017  Ngasha also wanted to meet the new baby but was kept from touching it as the mother was very careful about her baby boy. As the Murera and Sonje led the others to Umani Hills they found it was not possible for them to climb the steep slopes with their bad legs, so they both decided just to be around the slopes while Jasiri climbed to the top and waited, looking for Faraja and Ziwa to follow him; when they did not follow he just went ahead on his own. (read more...) view

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  July  2017    Ziwa was the making the most noise as he did not want any of the wild bulls near him.    Faraja, Ngasha and Jasiri all took to pushing on the stockade gates in an effort to get to Ziwa and get him to be quiet and calm down so that the wild elephants would come closer enabling them to see them better and greet them in order to start forming some sort of friendship with them. (read more...) view

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  June  2017  Mwashoti and Zongoloni tried to carry on following the bull but the keepers were afraid Mwashoti might get in trouble with his leg because the wild elephants can be quite boisterous, whilst Ziwa and Jasiri began their usual trumpeting going to Lima Lima for support, who was keeping a watchful eye on everyone and letting the keepers know when some wild elephants were close. (read more...) view

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  April  2017  All the screaming and trumpeting caught the orphans by surprise and upset them as they did not know what was going on. Jasiri was trying to see what was going on but the wild elephants moved further into the forest and as such he was not able to see anything and things quieted down which meant that the babies could have more of a peaceful night and were able to get some rest so that they could enjoy their day. (read more...) view

Jasiri and Zongoloni were feeling quite bothers by some flying and biting insects today that sent them running into the bushes in an effort to get away from them which they succeed in doing and it was not long before they rejoined their friends and made their way to the bottle feeding area. (read more...)

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  March  2017  Murera and Sonje however decided to change the direction being taken and ran to the front of the line blocking the path. Jasiri and Faraja began a pushing game in front of Sonje who pushed their bottoms to get them to move faster and stop holding up the group. (read more...) view

Once at the springs Murera was seen looking for Mwashoti. She rumbled for him to come and join her. He came running from the bushes to see what she wanted and was escorted to her side by Quanza. Once the orphans were sure that the hyenas had stopped shouting they made their way to the Umani Hills under the leadership of Faraja, Jasiri and Lima Lima. (read more...)

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  February  2017  Faraja scooped off the teat of his bottles and held it inside his mouth, and began crushing it using his teeth. The keeper had to plead with naughty Faraja to release the bottle teat from his mouth! 
 
At mud bath time we were surprised when we saw Jasiri rolling his tongue inside his mouth several times, and before he went to water to swim, we saw his one of his molars fall out! (read more...)

Kibwezi Forest/Umani Springs Unit  June  2016  Sonje had some sticks in her mouth which she dropped as she rushed to see what was wrong. Mwashoti was hanging near Murera and when Lima Lima heard the rumbles she also went to see why Alamaya was complaining. Ziwa was on the other side and happy browsing on his own, happy also not to be caught up in the new pushing games!  
 
The big boys amidst the Umani orphans Jasiri, Faraja and Ngasha had time to test out their strength in their usual pushing games; Jasiri won the game by pushing the other two, Ngasha and Faraja down, forcing Quanza to actually come over and help the two boys. (read more...)

After visiting the water hole at noon the babies once again went in search of greens to eat. At the mudabath Sonje and Murera escorted Ziwa to the mudwallow where the two watched over him making sure that the rough boys, Faraja with Jasiri, left him alone and did not bully him. (read more...)

Jasiri and Ngasha were engaged in pushing games which became quite heated as Ngasha grabbed Jasiri’s tail which did not go down well with Jasiri who retaliated and the two came to logger heads until some buffaloes appeared unexpectedly, scaring them and forcing them to separate from one another bringing an end to their feud. (read more...) view

When Jasiri got there he found it was not muddy enough and he began digging some more mud to mix into the clear water preferring it thinker rather than the clear spring water top that had formed. (read more...) view

Zongoloni spotted the keepers were sited and also Lima Lima was near the keepers waiting for keepers to get up and walk them there for the bottle feeding and taking mudbath. 
When the orphans had already taken their bottles ,Ngasha continued to the waterhole testing if the water was warm and not cold, but Zongoloni with Jasiri and other boys just got into the wallowing and enjoyed the mudbath, leaving Murera on the sideways of the waterhole splashing her knees, 
Zongoloni kept the babies running to the dusting soil, and the moment they fell on the dust rolling their bellies and throwing some soil on their back, Faraja with Ngasha did not wait any more after felling the soil on their back was so hot that, they left it and go for the forest under shades with the keepers. (read more...)
