Nursery Unit  October  2017  Ndiwa followed them and the keepers tried to call her back but she kept following the buffalos. They had to run ahead and hide in the bushes from the buffalos, while trying to separate Ndiwa from them and eventually they managed, but it was quite a chase! Nursery Unit  August  2017  Lasayen is not overly friendly with the young ones so was happy to push him back but a strong warning from Mbegu (who was close by trying to suck up spilt milk which she enjoys) prevented this. With Mbegu around no milk will ever go to waste – she is not a greedy girl but she enjoys collecting up every drop of spilt milk and in the wheelbarrow too, but she will never steal a bottle! Malkia was with Mbegu and copying her to suck up all the spilt milk with their trunks like a vacuum. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  May  2017  Ukame might miss Kelelari as he is one that likes to be adventurous with her and they are both the oldest in the herd, but it will not be long before these two are reunited at the Ithumba rehabilitation stockade.  
 
Sana Sana is not always fond of mud bathing in the main mud bath but today whilst in the forest, she decided to have a lengthy mud bath with Malkia after the came across a small shallow puddle full of mud. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  May  2017  Often at some stage in the day, they will take a break from the others and go off to browse on their own. Today they did the same thing but the nice thing about these two is that the keepers do not need to go and look for them, they will always find the herd and come back!

Nursery Unit  April  2017  Jotto happens to be such a kind orphan who always wants to put a smile on everyone’s face, no matter their age, size or character. The two enjoyed a game of hide and seek around the bushes, wrestling and climbing on each other. 
 
During the babies’ hourly visit from the older herd this morning, Mbegu handed over the main responsibility to Godoma and Malkia who enjoyed plenty of time looking after the young babies. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  April  2017  Normally the older ones visit the babies after public visiting and whilst some are not bothered by the younger ones at all, for others, like Esampu, Maramoja, Godoma, Malkia, Sana Sana, Malima and Mbegu, it is a precious moment and puts a big smile on their elephant faces. (read more...) view

The big females were busy checking over the little babies but baby Baringo took a shine to Pare and was running after him, and it was funny to watch Pare running away from him, yelling, not wanting the baby to follow him! Nursery Unit  March  2017  Their presence prompted little Malima, Jotto and Esampu to run out of the mud pool in fright, although this proved tricky for little Malima and Jotto as the sides of the mud pool were sticky and wet. It was too slippery for them to get out quickly! The two young ones started yelling in protest at being unable to get out since they had watched Esampu exit with no trouble! Sana Sana and Malkia who were not shaken when the warthogs came in, attempted to charge at them, but this proved very difficult in the thick mud. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  February  2017  When they had reached the open area on the rocks she ran after them shouting to join the older group. By this stage there was nothing that could be done except to accept her into the herd. She arrived at the mud bath area again and went straight to the wheelbarrow demanding for more milk – this time it was orphan Malkia that stopped her and drove her away from the wheelbarrow – she then abandoned trying to get more milk and decided to have a mud bath with Mbegu along the edge of the pool instead. (read more...) view

Malkia has been promoted to the older herd so that she can receive some discipline from her older peers in the herd, but this has now meant that Tagwa has started misbehaving and today during the public visit she was promoted to the older herd too, so that she can learn the same manners and social habits from the older ones like Malkia(read more...)

Nursery Unit  November  2016  This gave Ndotto a fright and he ran off looking for Oltaiyoni and the rest of the herd. His yelling frightened the rest of the group and they followed him and when they reached the rest of the herd they all stood together with their ears held high; even little ones like Jotto, Ambo, Tamiyoi, Esampu and Malkia were seen with their ears held high but standing tight in the middle of the group, in the midst of Roi, Mbegu, Oltaiyoni, Kamok, Kauro and Maramoja. (read more...) view
