Nursery Unit  September  2017  Mbegu was very busy, making regular returns to the stockades calling out in low rumbles to the other orphans to try and encourage them to head out to browse. Finally her efforts worked and they started walking out one by one slowly to the field. However, even out in the forest many stayed reluctant to start their morning browsing and only Ndiwa, Mundusi, Maramoja, Kauro, Lasayen and Rapa appeared relaxed. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  September  2017  The game was started by Enkesha, who really loves mud baths and in all kinds of weather. Then she was followed by Malima, Jotto, Tamiyoi, little Maktao, Sattao and Musiara as well, who all rolled and played happily in the muddy pool. Their bumping, sliding and trumpeting in happiness drew the older orphans to the side lines to watch them, as Mbegu, Godoma and Maramoja drove away the likes of Rapa, Ngilai, Pare, Lasayen and Ndotto so they did not interrupt or climb on the young ones. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  August  2017  They came to an abrupt halt where the orphans and keepers were as they backed away from the charging buffalos. The sudden commotion saw all the orphans try to stand as close to the keepers as they could and no one wanted to be at the front! Even the bigger ones like Kauro, Ndotto, Lasayen, Rapa, Maramoja, Godoma and Mbegu were all trying to stand close together and close to the keepers. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  August  2017  The reason why Musiara is happier around Luggard is that he moves very gently, is very welcoming to the little boys and he browsers not far from the keepers which Musiara also likes to do. Nursery Unit  August  2017  When they spotted the keepers and the orphans they all looked up and stood watching them. They slowly started walking towards the keepers and the orphans and one female buffalo even tried to chase the keepers, but the big orphans like Mbegu, Maramoja, Kauro, Godoma and Lasayen, Ndotto, Pare and Rapa marched towards her with their ears spread and trumpeting. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  June  2017  Everyone crowded round trying to reach out to him and touch and communicate with him. Most surprising was Rapa, who is known to be a bit of a bully to all newcomers in the Nursery, but as all the other orphans were walking out to the forest Rapa hid in one of the nearby stockades and waited until it was quiet to walk back to the new arrivals gate. (read more...) view

Apart from Mundusi and Ndiwa who stay apart from the group most of the time, the entire herd was crowded together. Nursery Unit  September  2016  Ndotto likes to play with anyone though and will take on any of his peers no matter how big they are! Roi is big and strong compared to Ndotto and she did not use all of her full might in the pushing game, but Ndotto gave it his best and took the game seriously! Nursery Unit  June  2016  At one stage Ndotto was trying to climb on Lasayen’s head as they both rolled on the ground. Rapa came over and tried to interrupt their game, but as soon as he came over and tried to make trouble Dupotto and Mbegu came over and intervened, warning Rapa away from the two playful boys. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  June  2016  The group charged at the lion bush bashing and trumpeting loudly and managed to get it to move away. They then ran to rejoin the rest of the orphan herd but it was a while before they settled down and for about 20 minutes they continued to trumpet and charge around to make sure that the big cat would stay away and thus keep the younger orphans, Murit, Ndotto, Lasayen, Godoma, Rapa, Sana Sana, Ngilai and Mbegu safe. (read more...) view
Nursery Unit  June  2016  As the stockade door was still closed Ndotto tried to climb over the door in an effort to reach Lasayen, while Lasayen continued knocking. When the keepers opened the door Ndotto ran out and the two friends engaged one another in a pushing game which continued all the way to the browsing field, where it was brought to an end by Rapa who came and interrupted the two forcing them apart, ending their fun. (read more...) view
Nursery Unit  June  2016  Once out in the browsing field some of the orphans settled to browse while others like Naseku, Kauro, Rapa, Tusuja, Mbegu and Dupotto charged around, running in and out of the bushes to welcome the new day. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  May  2016  She also settled to browse very well. Next to her stockade is the young baby Ambo who kept putting his trunk through the slats of his stockade to reach her, though she did not show much interest in the little boy who was trying to comfort her!

Nursery Unit  March  2016  Things then escalated when two of the piglets lost sight of their mother and entered the visiting area. Lasayen, Rapa and Tusuja were all chasing the piglets around and there was no way for the piglets through the people because it was very busy so they retreated to the mud pool. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  January  2016  Boromoko didn’t want to share the water and hit him on the head with his trunk before taking his ear in his mouth. Alamaya shouted with pain but Boromoko did not let go and they moved around in a circle before a keeper jumped in to save Alamaya.  
 
Ndotto was standing by himself when he turned to play with who he thought was his friend Lasayen, actually it was the cheeky, naughty boy Rapa who knocked him down. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  December  2015  In most instances when the young ones like Ngilai, try to suckle on the older females ears they are allowed to, but when Siangiki sees a little one like Ngilai approaching to try and do this she pushes them away – quite a rare characteristic in young female elephants! 
 
Roi is a girl though that loves to hang out with the young ones like Ndotto, Lasayen, Godoma and Rapa Tamiyoi and company. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  November  2015  Out in the field at around 10 o’clock as the orphans were busy browsing deep in the forest they were suddenly frightened by two male buffaloes that made their way running through the orphans to the browsing area; leaving the entire orphaned herd slightly shaken up with the young ones like Murit, Rapa, Godoma, Mbegu, Kamok, Roi, Ndotto and Lasayen yelling and running to their keepers. (read more...) view
Nursery Unit  November  2015  He tried to climb on her though which made Mbegu yell out for help. Oltaiyoni, the leader of the first group, walked right into the mud hole to recue Mbegu from Mwashoti! The presence of Oltaiyoni saw Mwashoti walk away and out of the mud pool, leaving Mbegu and Dupotto in peace and also allowing Godoma and Rapa to join in the mud bath. (read more...) view
Nursery Unit  November  2015  During public viewing little Ndotto, Lasayen and Rapa all had a lovely time playing with Ndotto and Lasayen enjoying lying along the rope cordon as they enjoyed the visiting public rubbing them as they rolled and bumped their feet; this was a game that attracted much applause! (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  October  2015  Balguda was the fastest of all the orphans running towards their keepers followed by Oltaiyoni and Sokotei, Arruba, Suswa, Rorogoi, Mashariki and Roi. This group went on trumpeting and bashing the bushes as a sign of strength and anger. The big girls became much more concerned when they could not find the group of little babies and the likes of Ndotto, Lasayen, Godoma and Rapa, but they had accompanied Kamok, Tusuja, Simotua and Mwashoti. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  October  2015  The two girls turned around quickly and trumpeted as they ran back to the keepers. Their sudden reaction made the entire herd frightened and they all began trumpeting and the little ones began shouting as they ran around trying to find the keepers. As Suswa and Rorogoi led the older group towards the keepers, Kamok, Mbegu and Dupotto led Lasayen, Ndotto, Ngilai, Murit, Godoma and Rapa towards the stockades though some keepers ran after them to try and bring them back. (read more...) view
