Nursery Unit  August  2018  Little did we know that a buffalo was grazing near his bedroom and that was probably what was causing his excitement. Tamiyoi and Malima took advantage of Maxwell being in his bedroom to steal some of his leftover lucerne pellets, and we watched as sometimes they resorted even to kneeling to reach further into his stockade and grab more with their trunks. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  August  2018  They don’t get them every day either, so they will use any opportunity to have some. Tamiyoi and Ndiwa for example will always pass by Maxwell’s stockade to grab some they might have spilled through his gate to the other side, before running into their stockades for their milk in the evening. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  August  2018  Enkesha normally loves mud bathing and is usually the first one in the water, but perhaps she was just not feeling up to it today. It did not take long for Kiasa, Maisha and Maktao to come out of the mud and join them to browse, but Musiara and Emoli enjoyed climbing on Tamiyoi’s back as she rolled around in the mud. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  July  2018  All the commotion attracted Maxwell’s attention as he was resting in his stockade. He got up too and started charging about in different directions thinking that perhaps there might be danger to fend off! His restlessness then affected the rest of the elephants who up until now had remained calm, Malima, Tamiyoi, Jotto and Ambo ran back to Maxwell’s gate, perhaps to reassure him that everything was fine and the older elephant girls were just in a hyperactive mood! (read more...) view

During the public visit, after the first group had finished their milk bottles, it was lovely to watch mud bath lovers like Enkesha and Kiasa dive into the mud, accompanied by Tamiyoi, Godoma, Mapia, Emoli, Malima, Sattao and Kuishi. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  January  2018  He was playing in the mud bath and Godoma joined him there too. He moved slightly to make way for Godoma and played in the muddy area behind. He submerged himself in the mud and took a light nap, and when he awoke he found he was now stuck in the thick mud! He couldn’t get up and started shouting for help, and immediately Godoma was there with Malima, Tamiyoi and Jotto standing on the side to offer help. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  October  2017  Having spent almost a month in his taming pen, he seems ready to join the others and is more trusting of the keepers. He seemed very quiet and calm walking out into the forest with the others and this gentle nature towards the other young and older ones meant he was well received by Mbegu, Kauro, Ndotto, Lasayen, Maramoja and the little ones too like Musiara, Ambo, Sattao, Jotto, Tamiyoi and Malima; they were all milling around him and enjoyed toughing him. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  August  2017  Little Musiara, Sattao and Maktao were chasing after the warthogs babies that had accompanied their mothers to eat lucerne pellets. These three little boys kept themselves busy chasing the young warthogs around the mud wallow and taking sharp turns, but at one point Musiara miscalculated his turn and fell over! He fell over and yelled which brought Godoma, Kuishi, Tamiyoi and Malima running over kicking up a cloud of dust as they found the warthogs close to where Musiara had just fallen over. (read more...) view

Nursery Unit  July  2017  Today it was not him who did this however but the matriarch, Mbegu! She was going into the stables of the younger ones and eating their leftovers; she kept dodging the keepers to get into those stalls. We remember how at milk feeding time Lasayen used to come down in one group and then go back to return with the second and ask for more –he has not done that in awhile! Today it was Tamiyoi who decided to try this tactic at getting more milk – when the second group came down she linked up with them and was the first at the wheelbarrow demanding to be fed. (read more...) view

Today they did the same thing but the nice thing about these two is that the keepers do not need to go and look for them, they will always find the herd and come back!

Nursery Unit  January  2017  Later Murit settled to fight with his best friend Luggard, but their fun game took a turn when naughty boy Rapa tried to join in and he is much too boisterous so they were not interested in playing with him. This annoyed Rapa and he started bashing small bushes down in protest!  
Out during the public visit the orphans were only quite active; only Malima and Tamiyoi had a busy time rolling on the loose soil as they enjoyed soil dusting and posing along the rope cordon, allowing the visitors to take lots of nice photos of them. (read more...)

Nursery Unit  November  2016  When the orphans were walking out to the forest this morning, the weather was very misty. The older females were concerned about their younger adopted babies moving in different directions in their small groups. There was one small group of younger orphans left behind some meters back without any older elephants to look after them – Malkia, Tamiyoi, Esampu, Tagwa, Sana Sana and the little girl Malima were without anyone to care for them. (read more...) view
