1/19/2010 - As the orphans were approaching the northern slopes of Mazinga Hill, the Keepers were surprised to see Shira and Siria raising their trunks and rumbling as they ran round the corner of the hill. When the Keepers caught up with them they were surprised to find them with Emily and Edie and their entourage. All then fed together until it was mudbath time when they went together to the waterhole at noon, and there enjoyed a wonderful and joint bathing session, Lolokwe, Salama and Nyiro playing with Siria. Lolokwe and Salama grabbed the same piece of cloth floating on the water that Shimba had enjoyed, and likewise began striking it against the water, taking turn and turn about, whilst Icholta used a dry stick to scratch her belly. Laikipia and Salama engaged one another in a pushing match. Siria was having such a good time that he forewent his bottle of milk when it arrived in the Pickup, but took it later after all the action had finished. When the Youngsters left the Waterhole, Icholta remained with them for a while, but then rumbled and returned to Emily’s group who were moving towards the airstrip.

ORPHAN PROFILE FOR: SALAMA (foster now)

Zoom / Enlarge A male calf estimated to have been born in June 1999 and therefore 3 months old on arrival, Salama is named for the village near which he was captured, and has the distinction of being the only elephant in the world to have been formally "arrested" in the wild! His herd went crop-raiding and Salama paid the price, frog-marched by irate tribesmen to the nearest Police Station. The Police called the Kenya Wildlife Service, and they called us! Salama is lucky indeed to have been rescued, for he comes from the troubled Laikipia population of refugee elephants who have fled from the North due to poaching, and who try to eke out an existence within an area densely populated by a farming connumity. Consequently, these elephants are always in trouble. Salama is tough, hardened to hardship. His strength of character is reflected in supreme confidence amongst his peers. He can also be a little "pushy" - in the Swahili language known affectionately by the Keepers as "mangaa" or in other words "mischievous". He, Laikipia and Lolokwe, others with strong Northern genes, are fiercely competitive. He is also very courageous, usually the first to back up Imenti when he chases away any intruders. Of all our orphans, Salama is one of the most outgoing, full of nonsense, and will be a force to be reckoned with when grown.
