It is with great sadness that we must report the loss of one of the Trusts unsung heroes. Patrick Mutuku selflessly dedicated his life to protecting Kenyas wildlife after graduating from Egerton University with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management. He has been a Team Leader heading our antipoaching teams for 12 years, and been at the forefront of our wildlife protection programs. Patrick has been a loyal and respected member of the The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust team throughout this time. In July this year he enrolled into the Kenyan Wildlife Services renowned Field Training Institute, Manyani Academy, together with other valued members of DSWTs antipoaching teams. He was evacuated a month later and admitted to Nairobi Hospital with Hepatitis B. Very sadly just three months later Patrick, ravaged by liver complications has died at just 38 years old, leaving a young family, and many friends and colleagues shocked at how fragile life can be.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is deeply saddened by this unexpected loss, and would like to share this with our global audience as I am sure there are many people who would like to contribute to the memory of a good man, a man who dedicated his life to saving Kenyas animals, one of Kenyas true heroes who did this work not to be celebrated, but to simply make a difference. His memory will continue to burn as his colleagues and the men who have served under and alongside him all these years keep up the valuable fight to preserve and protect Kenya's irreplaceable wildlife heritage.
