A Month with the Aerial Surveillance Unit

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust dedicates huge efforts to patrolling the skies over the Tsavo Conservation Area and the Lamu District hand-in-hand with the Kenya Wildlife Service.  During the month of December 2013 the Unit, headed by Chief Pilot Nick Trent, flew nearly 47 hours covering just under 4000 miles.

The month sadly revealed 16 fresh elephant carcasses south of the Tica River, including 3 carcasses outside of the Park's boundaries, yet thankfully one of the poaching gangs, responsible for the death of 7 of the elephants was captured and arrested by KWS.
