Help build a stable for orphaned giraffe Kili

Kili adores his stable alongside the elephant orphans at the Nairobi Nursery, however as he continues to flourish in our care, he is fast outgrowing his home, designed for a much shorter baby elephant!

Found wandering alone, Kili was rescued in August from the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Vet Dr. Njoroge, who heads the DSWT/KWS Amboseli Mobile Veterinary Unit. He has since settled extremely well at the Nairobi Orphanage, where our keepers have adapted to caring for a baby giraffe, alongside 30 infant orphaned elephants.

Arriving just days old, the keepers needed to clamber high up on the stockade partitions in order to get the milk bottle at the appropriate angle so that it feels natural for Kili when he feeds.  As he grows, this is becoming increasingly difficult.

As Kili grows we have to now think creatively about a new home for him as he needs the security and protection of a stable rather than a more open stockade. With the Nairobi Park lions common place around the Nursery compound at night Kili would panic. The cosy security of a high roofed special stable is what Kili now requires, the skyscraper amongst the existing stables.  Enabling him space at night and our keepers the ability to feed him from up high, but to make this happen we need your support.

We are asking you to be a part of Kili’s future, in contributing to the Kili Stable Appeal you’ll be ensuring he has a specially designed space that can provide for his needs.
