Yao Ming, the former NBA Basketball star and giant sporting icon in China has been on a mission in Kenya documenting the threats faced by the African elephant and rhino on an in-depth campaign organised by WildAid and Save the Elephants, to end the illegal trade in ivory and rhino horn. During the filming of his feature-length documentary called The End of the Wild, Yao Ming made a special visit to the Nairobi Nursery to meet our orphan family and their human keepers.

Yao Ming and the Orphan Family

Spending a morning with Kinango, our newest and youngest orphaned elephant calf, Yao could only visualize the stark contrast between this tiny 2 week old baby and the carcasses of elephant mothers he had seen only days before on his campaign trip.

Having made significant progress in discouraging the consumption of shark fin soup in China, Yao Ming believes he can also help to educate people in China, and the world, about the poaching crisis and how vital it is to say no to ivory and rhino horn.
