The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Meru Mobile Veterinary Unit, which is funded and operated by the DSWT in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, provides permanent veterinary support to the larger Meru ecosystem comprising of Meru National Park, Bisanadi National Park and Kora National Reserve, including all wildlife dispersal areas around the Eastern and Northern Conservation Areas

Within this huge expanse the Meru Unit must travel large distances in order to respond to as many wildlife cases as possible and during the month of August this has certainly been the case, with the team, headed by KWS Field Veterinarian Dr. Rono, travelling from Meru to Lewa, Ol Pejeta, Solio, and Borana Ranches.

The biggest case in August was the translocation of 21 rhinos from Lewa and Lake Nakuru to Borana Ranch in Laikipia, along with an extensive team, the Meru Unit spent a week ensuring the safe darting and transportation of each rhino to their new home.

The Meru Unit, such like the Tsavo and Mara Unit, has continued to witness the devastating effects of poaching, and with more rhinos in the areas in which the Unit operates, the team have sadly reported another two rhino deaths, one of which was a pregnant female.
