Keepers' Diaries, November 2019

Voi Reintegration Unit

Not much can top the joy we experienced this month when on the 17th November we were blessed with the arrival of two tiny little beings, Eco and Mwitu, Ex orphans Edie and Mweya’s respective wild born babies. This is 20 year old Edie’s third wild born baby, her first being ten year old Ella and four year old Eden. Her older calves must have stayed behind with Emily’s herd but these two ex-orphans were eager to share their joy with their extended family, and of course by arriving to spend time amidst the dependent orphans of Voi they find themselves with some twenty eager nannies too!  This is 18 year old Mweya’s first baby so she is a late bloomer but we are delighted she now has a little girl to stand by her side forever. We estimate Eco is about four months old and Mwitu only slightly younger at about 3 months. The dry season would have inhibited them moving any earlier with all the waterholes dried up, but with the onset of the early rains, and with their calves older and stronger, they were able to make that journey.  The ex-orphans in Voi have developed a pattern of visiting dry season ranges where the food remains plentiful well over 100 - 150 kms away.

01 November 2019

The stockade dependent orphans left their stockades for their morning milk bottle followed by the Lucerne pellet feeding after which they hung around the stockade for some fun and games before heading to the Park. Mbirikani invited Godoma for a game of lying on one another while Lasayen stood watching them biting his trunk, upset that he had not been invited to join in.  Kihari came in and broke up the game to engage Lasayen while Nelion took on Godoma for a strength testing game.

Lentili and Bada took the lead of the orphan her to the park with Mbegu staying close to Pika Pika while both Kenia and Naipoki tried to get Pika Pika’s attention and get her to follow them. The orphan settled to browse on the foot of Msinga Hill, where Sagala tried to introduce a soil bathing game, but was unsuccessful in getting anyone to join in.

The orphans headed to the baobab tree water hole at noon where they drank their milk before going to the water trough.  Ndoria was the first to enter the water hole for a quick bath with Rorogoi and Sagala joining in. Murit and Aruba were seen holding each other trunks as if in a deep conversation, before joining their friends for the afternoon browsing session which took place close to the waterhole.

02 November 2019

Following the morning’s milk and supplement feeding Mbegu was seen sneaking her trunk fingers through one of the stockade fence lines to pull at a green grewia branch while Lasayen enjoyed a scratching session against the favourite rock, while Mashariki walked around swinging her trunk from side to side. Arruba was seen at the other end of the compound running around trumpeting loudly but no one knew why she was so excited.

Today the orphans settled to browse on the western foot of Msinga Hill where Ndotto was seen scratching his itchy bottom against a big rock while Godoma lay on the ground for a nap while basking in the sunshine.  Lasayen was not happy to see Godoma lying down and went straight over to engage her in a pushing game.

At noon the orphans headed to the baobab tree waterhole to quench their thirst at the water trough. None of them wallowed as the weather had turned chilly and it was not long before they resumed their browsing activities.

03 November 2019

It was a bright, sunny morning and Lasayen was enjoying a scratching session against the orphan’s favourite rock near one of the stockade terraces. Murit was walking along the terrace making sure not to bother Lasayen as he made his way to join Panda for a drink at the stockade water trough. Sagala was having fun rolling around on the ground while Suswa browsed on leaves from an acacia tree close to the stockade fence line.

Nguvu took the lead of the orphans out to the Park today and they settled to browse in the open plains walking around to feed on the large variety of green vegetation available to them.  Ndotto browsed together with Arruba and Mbegu while Naipoki got to browse with Pika Pika.

There was a light rain shower later in the day as the orphans were busy browsing on the northern foot of the Msinga Hill having avoided the mud bath due to the chilly weather.

04 November 2019

After the morning milk feed, the stockade dependent orphans gathered for the Lucerne grass pellet feeding before engaging in games around the stockade compound after which they followed Mbegu and Godoma to the Park with Napoki stuck to Pika Pika’s side.

Rorogoi hid behind a big rock for a private browsing session away for the rest of the orphan herd.

The plains were green and full of lush vegetation and the orphans enjoyed feeding on everything they could.

At mid-day, they made their way to the baobab tree water hole for their milk and a drink of water. They did not wallow choosing instead to continue with their browsing activities which they did on the rocky hillside of Msgina Hill. They browsed here until it was time to return to the stockades for the night which they did under Sagala’s leadership.

05 November 2019

The milk dependent orphans came running out of the stockades for the morning milk bottle which they downed in a matter of seconds. The orphans then left the stockade compound for the Park without engaging in any games.

The browsed their way up Msinga Hill enjoying the lush green grass and rain water collected in the rocks. Naipoki and Panda were seen settling down with Pika Pika as Mbegu was comfortable leading her usual group of five friends. She then took the lead of Godoma, Murit, Lasayen, Ndotto, Tahri, Emoli, Sagala, Ngilai and Pika Pika to the noon milk feeding area with the rest of the orphan herd continuing with their browsing activities. This also meant that Pika Pika was once again with Mbegu; Sagala, Murit and Pika Pika lay down and relaxed while Mbegu and Godoma kept watch over them.

The older orphans came down hill in the late afternoon to collect Mbegu’s group and lead them all to the safety of the stockades for the night.

06 November 2019

It was an early start to the morning, with the milk and supplement feeding taking centre stage for the morning’s activities. Ngilai and Murit engaged one another in a play fighting game which sent Pika Pika running off to Naipoki and Panda.  There were brief games in the stockade compound before Bada and Tundani led the orphan herd to the plains to browse.

The sun was bright and the orphans had a morning wallow in a waterhole that they found out in the bush. Mbirikani squeezed herself into the small hole smearing thick mud all over her body. Lasayen lay down and stretched his trunk towards Pika Pika welcoming the youngster to join him for a dust bath, but Pika Pika was not interested, choosing instead to stay by Naipoki’s side.  The orphans visited the baobab tree waterhole for their noon milk feed before resuming with their browsing activities.

07 November 2019

It was another wonderful morning as the milk dependent orphan elephants exited their stockades and downed their morning milk bottle before joining their older friends for the supplement feeding. The orphan herd then followed Bada and Nguvu out to the Park. The group browsed peacefully with Mbegu taking her herd to the same muddy hole they visited yesterday. Unfortunately it had dried up and as such they couldn’t wallow.

The orphans visited the baobab tree waterhole with Mbegu taking her last milk bottle from the Keeper’s hands and downing its contents without any help.  After a quick wallow the orphans resumed with their browsing activities which took place close to the water hole.

08 November 2019

After a wonderful morning feed, the stockade dependent orphan elephants went ahead with their usual games around the stockade compound, with soil bathing being the biggest event. Ngilai and Murit enjoyed an early morning strength testing game while Godoma climbed over Tahri who was lying on the ground.  Arruba, Rorogoi, Suswa, Nguvu and Naipoki all came running in to help Tahri who was being prevented from getting to her feet by Godoma.

Mudanda had a slight limp today and a swelling was seen on her back right hand leg. It appeared to be a boil and was treated accordingly. As she could not move quickly, Embu, Ndotto, and Rorogoi stayed close to the stockades with her for the days browsing activities.

A wild elephant herd came past the orphans this morning but did not join up with them. Ndotto and Lasayen took a break from browsing to play a strength testing game which was broken up by Suswa who felt that they needed to concentrate on browsing before making their way to the waterhole at noon. As it was a cold day none of the orphans went in to the water, choosing instead to return to their browsing activities after the milk feed and a drink from the water trough.

09 November 2019

The orphans enjoyed their morning milk feed before gathering for the Lucerne grass pellet feeding after which they teamed up in groups for stockade games. Mbirikani lay down to play, stretching her trunk towards Pika Pika as an invitation to join her, which Naipoki was not happy with. To prevent Pika Pia from playing with Mbirikani she offered herself up as a play mate instead. When Panda saw what was happening she went and played with Pika Pika herself while Bada and Ishaq-B enjoyed a strength testing game. Ndotto climbed onto a rock and was about to come down when Mashariki came over and engaged him a pushing game.

Once the stockade fun and games were over the orphans headed out to the bush where they browsed until noon, at which point they visited the baobab tree water hole and had a lot of fun playing mud bathing games before continuing with their browsing activities.

10 November 2019

As the sun rose in the east the stockade dependent orphan were busy playing, following the early morning milk and supplement feeding.  Kenia and Ndii settled with their adopted babies Araba and Tahri, while Naipoki was busy building her relationship with Pika Pika. Medicine was applied to Mudanda’s leg and she spent the day browsing close to the stockades.

The orphans had a wonderful and peaceful morning browsing in single file before heading to their noon milk bottle feeding. They were so intent on their milk that they didn’t even stop to interact with a wild herd they crossed paths with. In the late afternoon the orphans enjoyed playing in some erosion trenches after which they returned to the safety of the stockades for the night.

11 November 2019

It was another wonderful morning as Mbegu and Murit came running out for their morning milk bottle before joining their friends at the Lucerne pellet feeding area after which the orphan herd followed Mbegu and Godoma to the Park for the day.

The orphans settled to browse along the foot of Msinga Hill as they slowly made their way to the baobab tree water hole. After their noon milk bottle they gathered around the water trough for a drink. Ndoria went into the water with Sagala following but as soon as Sagala’s trunk tested the temperature of the water she quickly backed out, choosing to remain out of the water with the rest of the orphans who felt it was too cold to swim.  As no one else came into the water, Ndoria also exited as the rest of the herd was impatient to return to their browsing activities.

12 November 2019

Ndotto and Bada were engaged in a play fighting game this morning while Godoma took on Nguvu.  Ndotto and Mbegu tried to climb on each other while Ngilai and Pika Pika watched.

The orphans made their way out to the Park under Lentili and Arruba’s leadership and they settled to browse on the large variety of vegetation available to them.  At noon they visited the baobab tree waterhole for their milk bottles but didn’t wallow as it was too cold. Ngilai engaged Emoli in a strength testing game and in the afternoon Mbegu, Ndotto, Nelion and Suswa took a break from browsing to enjoy a dust bath.

13 November 2019

We received 22mm of rain last night and it was still raining as the orphans exited their stockades for their morning milk bottle.  They hung around the compound for a little while before making their way out to browse following Arruba, Suswa and Lentili.

The orphans browsed in single file, enjoying the wet grass and vegetation that was shooting up as a result of the rain. After browsing for more than three hours, Rorogoi took a break from browsing to enjoy a dust bath while also drawing what little warmth she could from the ground. Nelion was also busy playing a dust bathing game while Tahri watched. Pika Pika was busy with Naipoki and Panda, but seemed to be favouring Naipoki, spending more time browsing by her side.

The orphans had their noon milk feed on the northern foot of Msinga Hill, choosing not to visit the baobab tree waterhole as they quenched their thirst from the numerous water pans around them instead. Mbegu, Ngilai, Godoma and Murit introduced their friends to a smaller water hole close to where they were browsing and they enjoyed an afternoon mud bath together there.  Ngilai engaged his best friend Emoli in a play fighting game after which they rejoined their friends who finishing up the days browsing activities.

Kenia, Ndii, Kihari and Panda were let out of their stockade during the night so that they could spend time browsing atop Msinga Hill above the office premises.

14 November 2019

Pika Pika came rushing out of her stockade this morning for her milk bottle. Emoli and Tahri were close behind her and tried to push her out of the way once they got to the bottles but Pika Pika stood firm and would not move, drinking her milk at her own leisure.

Today the orphans headed to the Park under the leadership of Mbirikani and Lentili. They spent the morning browsing with Mbegu and Godoma keeping Pika Pika between them so that Naipoki would not have access to her.

After the noon milk feed the orphans proceeded to the baobab tree water hole where they had a quick wallow as they were more intent on dust bathing with Godoma, Tahri and Lasayen taking centre, stage while Ngilai was happy to get some alone time with Pika Pika and the two spent the time getting to know one another a little better.

15 November 2019

The morning began with the usual milk and supplement feeding with Mbirikani running to join the stockade dependent orphans at the supplement feeding area. Nelion then engaged Sagala in a pushing game before the two joined the rest of the group who were heading out for the day.

Bada took the lead to the southern foot of Msinga Hill where they settled to browse. The orphans visited the baobab tree water hole for the noon milk feed but did not really want to wallow as it was a chilly day. Kenia later decided to plunge into the water showing her friends that it really wasn’t that cold, while Ndoria enjoyed a dust bath close to the water hole. The Keepers continue to treat the wound on Mudanda’s leg, unsure as to what may have caused it as it is not infected.

16 November 2019

It was a bright morning as the orphans exited their stockades to begin the day. After the morning milk and supplement feeding they hung around the stockade compound playing. Mbegu and Ndotto intertwined their trunks before following their friends out to the Park.

Mudanda is feeling better today and was able to keep up with the rest of the group as they all followed behind Bada and Lentili. Suswa, Embu and Pika Pika were leading just behind them. The orphans browsed peacefully on the northern foot of Msinga Hill until it was time to visit the baobab tree water hole at noon.

It had become a cloudy day and as such none of the orphans went into the water. Ndii and Bada enjoyed a dust bath in some shallow holes before joining the rest of the orphan herd that had resumed their browsing activities.

17 November 2019

The orphans woke up early this morning ready to begin their day. They were in a very jovial mood as they charged around the stockade compound trumpeting loudly. Once they had quieted down Lentili, Nelion and Nguvu took the lead to the Park. Kenia hung back a little as if sensing that something was going to happen today and not wanting to leave the stockade.

Once the orphans had left the Keepers began their usual routine of emptying and cleaning the stockade water trough.  At around 9am Edie and Mweya arrived with their new born babies Eco and Mwitu in tow. They were very thirsty and headed straight to the water trough. When they saw it was empty them went to the water hole in the Park where they settled for a drink whilst their babies enjoyed a wallow. The Keepers were very excited to see the new wild born calves. Edie’s calf is a boy approximately four months old whilst Mweya’s is a little girl estimated to be about three months old. Kenia must have heard them this morning and was communicating with them as elephants do, over vast distances, wanting to see them.

18 November 2019

This morning Kenia, Kihari, Ndii and Naipoki gathered the stockade dependent orphan elephants together so that they could warmly welcome the ex-orphans Edie, Mweya and their calves. Panda seemed to be especially interested in the babies, wanting to interact with them. Edie and Mweya were not entirely 100% trusting of her and kept their babies beside them. Eco and Mwitu enjoyed playing around the stockade compound before joining their mothers for the Lucerne pellet feeding.  Eco was mischievous and climbed on Mwitu’s back.

Kenia, Naipoki, Ndii and Kihari led the group out for the day followed a short while later by Edie, Eco, Mweya and Mwitu who caught up with them in the Park and joined them for the mornings browsing activities. Bada has a soft spot for the babies and when Mweya and Edie tried to push him away he cried and wouldn’t stop until they let him stay.

The milk dependent orphans had their noon milk feed close to the baobab tree after which Kenia, Ndii, Kihari, Mbirikani and Bada joined Mweya and Edie, spending the night in the Park with their older friends.

19 November 2019

It was another perfect beginning to the day as the orphans enjoyed a morning milk bottle before settling for the supplement feeding. The earliest callers to the stockade were Kenia, Ndii, Kihari, Bada and Mbirikani who came to join their younger friends for the supplement feeding after which they all headed to the Park together.  The two ex-orphans and their calves were nowhere to be seen today though Bada did keep a constant eye out for them.

Rorogoi took a break from browsing to enjoy a ride on Ndotto’s back which Ndotto was not too happy about. After the noon milk feed the orphans had a drink from baobab tree water trough. The rest of the days browsing activities took place around the water hole.

20 November 2019

While out in the Park Tahri lay on the ground in an effort to extract some warmth from the soil, and fell asleep. Kenia, Ndii and Kihari thought that something was wrong and surrounded her, touching her to make sure that she was okay.

The orphan elephants visited the baobab tree water hole at noon where they had their milk and a drink of water. Emoli and Sagala attempted to wallow but soon gave up as they found the water too cold. Ndotto was seen pushing the big baobab tree with his little tusks, while Lasayen tried to engage Ngilai in a pushing game but Ngilai completely ignored him.

The orphan herd browsed their way to the middle water hole keeping an eye out for Edie and Mweya. They did not find their older friends and reluctantly turned around when it was time to return to the safety of the stockades for the night.

21 November 2019

The Voi orphans started their day today full of energy and had their delicious morning milk bottle before settling down for the highly nutritious Lucerne grass pellets. The earliest callers to the stockade compound this morning were Edie with her little baby Eco and Mweya with little Mwitu. The ex-orphans and their babies joined the stockade dependent babies to eat some Lucerne pellets. Eco and Mwitu liked the pellets and were busy scooping piles of them with their trunks and feeding alongside the others. Panda and Bada gave up their pellet feeding time to try and play with the little wild-born babies.

After the feeding was over, Kenia, Ndii and Lentili started to lead all the dependent orphans out to browse for the day, with the ex-orphans following them behind. Panda, Mbegu and Bada were busy browsing with the wild born babies and were really enjoying their company, as they all slowly moved towards the water hole that afternoon. When all the dependent orphans had finished their milk and the ex-orphans followed behind to make their way to the water hole too, Mweya, Mwitu, Eco and Edie started running down the hill which caused great excitement amongst all the orphans, scattering them in all directions as they charged and trumpeted in delight. The Keepers feeding the last group of three babies had to dart to the side and stand up against the car carrying the milk bottles to avoid being trampled in all the excitement! Mweya can sometimes be unpredictable and we need to watch her carefully. Mweya and her baby Mwitu left after mud bathing, and Murit followed them trying to entice baby Mwitu into a pushing game, but he didn’t succeed. Mweya and Edie successfully later went off with Bada, trying to recruit him as a new ‘nanny’ in their herd, spending that night with him out in the Park.

22 November 2019

It was quite chilly this morning as the orphans had their milk bottles and supplement feeding. They later briefly engaged in some wonderful soil dusting games before following behind Embu, Rorogoi and Naipoki for their day of browsing.

While busy browsing on the eastern side of Msinga Hill at 8.30am, Edie, Eco, Bada, Mweya and Mwitu arrived to join the Voi stockade dependent orphans. Babies Eco and Mwitu were very happy and excited to join Kenia’s herd, playing and lying down on the ground where they were surrounded by the more than thirty stockade dependent orphans, as well as their mothers. Eco and Mwitu liked the environment around Msinga hill, scratching their faces on a rock there and playing hide and seek games amongst them as well.

The ex-orphans and the stockade dependent orphans made their way slowly to the mud bath for the dependent babies to have their 11am milk bottles. Arruba and Panda enjoyed swimming in the middle of the water hole beside the baobab tree. Bada and Nelion shared the same rubbing space on the baobab tree too, as Ndotto was busy sleeping on the edge of the water hole. Ndotto was left behind as his friends all walked off to browse for the rest of the day, and he came running to catch up a bit later when he realized he had been left behind!

Arruba, Ishaq-B and Lentili had to guard little Emoli, while Rorogoi was tasked to guard Pika Pika from walking off with the ex-orphans Edie and Mweya. Bada, Panda and Nguvu went with them however and spent the night outside the stockade compound. This was the second time for Bada.

23 November 2019

Early in the morning, Edie and Mweya showed up at the stockade compound again and joined the junior orphans for the supplement feeding. They both hung around the stockade and later they all walked out to the bush together. On the way, the ex-orphans diverted off and started browsing in a different direction, taking Bada and Nguvu with them. Panda stayed and browsed with Kenia’s herd today. Kenia and Ndii took their herd off in a hurry, walking in the opposite direction towards the baobab tree water hole, hoping to avoid any more of their members from being stolen and absorbed into Edie and Mweya’s ex-orphan herd. Kenia and Ndii have always worried lot about the fate of their leadership and their herd and don’t like to lose any members.

At mid-day the orphans went for their routine afternoon milk feed and later enjoyed their mud bath.

When they were done they walked far north of the water hole along the grasslands happily browsing until 5pm in the evening when they headed back to the stockades for the night.

24 November 2019

Bada and Nguvu who spent the night out with the ex-orphans still had not turned up to the stockade compound by this morning. Out in the bush, the orphans settled on the western foot of Msinga Hill to browse as the long grass continues to shoot up with the ongoing rains – it is almost taking over the height of some of the orphans!

Later, just before leaving for the afternoon mud bath, Mweya and Edie re-united with the stockade dependent orphans with Bada and Nguvu on board as Nannies. Coming down towards the water hole, Mweya, Eco and Mwitu were very excited. Mweya tried to run down the hill again and chase some of the Keepers walking in front of her but she was told to behave and the Keepers gave her the right of way towards the water hole. At the water hole after milk feeding, the Voi dependent orphans and the ex-orphans had a wonderful mud bath. A few minutes later, the ex-orphans left with Nguvu and Bada again, who seem to have been completely absorbed by Edie and Mweya’s herd as extra security and family for babies Eco and Mwitu.

25 November 2019

The Voi dependent orphans were playing after their milk and supplement feeding this morning. Godoma then attempted to go down a very tall and steep stockade terrace, but Nelion and Arruba saw her and knew she might hurt herself so they hurried towards her to prevent her. Arruba pushed Godoma back, which actually ended up in a pushing game between the two. Tahri also came over to join them. Mudanda scratched her itchy side on one of the stockade terraces. Sagala and Emoli seemed to miss the babies Eco and Mwitu who did not yet turn up this morning, and started walking out to browse early, to perhaps try their luck in finding them out in the bush.

Just after the dependent orphans had left, Mweya, Edie, Bada, Nguvu and their babies arrived in the compound from the opposite direction, missing the others. Mashariki, Naipoki and Lentili have joined Bada and Nguvu in their new herd with the ex-orphans and remained behind with them in the compound for some time before leaving to browse with them. This herd never caught up with the Voi dependent babies all day.

26 November 2019

The morning was cloudy and grey and light rain was falling as the orphan elephants assembled for their delicious milk bottles. Mashariki was the earliest caller of the day, after leaving the dependent herd yesterday to join Edie and Mweya in the Park. Today she arrived alone.

The Voi orphans had a nice day today with Mudanda and Embu leading their friends for the beginning of the browsing day on the northern side of Msinga Hill. Nelion chose to browse on the hill away from the others, leaving his friends browsing downhill. After browsing for two hours, Ngilai approached his best friend Emoli, seeking to engage him in a play fight. Emoli ignored Ngilai’s advances for a game and concentrated on browsing as according to him it was still too early in the morning to play.

The Voi orphans later visited the baobab tree water hole as usual for their afternoon milk bottle. Rorogoi closed the day in the evening by playing in a deep erosion trench before joining her friends to walk back to the stockade compound for the night.

27 November 2019

After their milk bottles this morning Arruba wanted to lead everyone out of the compound to browse but the others resisted as they wanted to play - some wanted to enjoy some soil dusting games, others were play-fighting and others were happily scratching on the large rocks.

Later they followed Arruba to enjoy browsing to the north of the stockades, slowly walking towards to the middle water hole, but later turning and walking towards the baobab tree water hole instead.

After milk feeding, Tahri went and stood close to the water hole but did not touch the cold water. Ndii went to join Tahri as Kenia stood close to them, guarding them from their other playful friends.

Later in the afternoon the sun was shining bright and the orphans plunged into a nearby water hole filled with rain water to enjoy a mud bath. Ishaq-B, Suswa and Rorogoi lead the swimming games.

Ndotto went to another water hole close to his friends’ one, that was filled with thick mud.

The rest of the day went on peacefully with Edie, Eco, Mweya, Mwitu, as well as Bada, Nguvu, Mbirikani, Naipoki, Lentili and Panda who are currently with them, not turning up today.

28 November 2019

Edie, Eco, Mweya, Mwitu, Bada, Nguvu, Naipoki, Lentili, Mbirikani and Panda all turned up to the compound in the morning and joined the stockade dependent orphans who were enjoying some Lucerne pellets. The ex-orphans seem very happy to have secured some extra help in looking after their babies by recruiting five of the Voi babies to join their herd for the time being – we will have to see how long it lasts and if these orphans end up joining them indefinitely! Eco was very playful and chose Pika Pika as her playing mate, while Mwitu played with Tahri.

All the orphans, both dependent and graduate, left the stockades at the same time walking along the northern side of Msinga Hill, but then the ex-orphans changed direction and walked off in the direction of the Voi River circuit, with the five new stockade-dependent orphans going with them.

Later in the evening, Rorogoi and Ngilai took a break from browsing to play and slide down an erosion trench on the side of the hill, before joining their friends for the final hour of browsing before going back to the stockades for the night.

29 November 2019

After the morning milk feed, both the Voi dependent orphans and the ex-orphans hung around the stockade compound socializing, with the wild-born babies getting maximum attention from the many elephants around them. Ndii, Naipoki and Nguvu all wanted to mingle and bond with Mwitu and Eco.

Later they all walked out to the bush but after a short time Mweya and Edie together with the six new recruits left towards the middle water hole leaving Kenia’s herd behind. Kenia’s herd visited the baobab tree water hole but the cold weather prevented them from any bathing activity. They chose to browse close to that water hole for the rest of the day.

30 November 2019

It was a beautiful beginning of the day with Edie, Eco, Mweya, Mwitu, Nguvu, Bada, Naipoki, Panda, Lentili and Mbirikani kindly joining the stockade dependent orphans elephants for the Lucerne pellet feeding session. Kihari and Tahri went to greet Eco by holding each other’s trunks, but Naipoki came over and blocked them from interacting with Eco further, proving what a good nanny she has become. Eco got bored of her tight security guard and sneaked behind her to play with Tahri, but her other new nanny Nguvu came charging over to try and threaten Tahri with his long sharp tusks, driving her away from playing with Eco. Edie and Mweya together with their new security guard detail split from the stockade dependent orphans and walked off towards the northern bushy area to browse.

Kenia and Mbegu’s herd visited the baobab tree water hole to have their milk bottles and drink some water. It was fairly cold so only Ndoria and Embu tried having a mud bath today. Arruba later led them to swim in a smaller waterhole full of rain water when it got warmer in the afternoon. Ndotto enjoyed taking a bath there, staying behind for a little while before joining his friends for the final browsing session of the day.
