Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit Report for August 2020

Published on the 15th of September, 2020

The area received minimal sporadic precipitation over the month, during which time the annual wildebeest migration began in earnest. Water and fodder for grazers is available and large carnivores/scavengers have benefited from the migrating wildebeests. The Unit attended to 7 cases involving 3 lions, 1 leopard, 2 elephants and a zebra.

Two of the lions were treated for natural causes and another was collared. One elephant was attended to for a spear injury caused in a case of human-elephant conflict, while another was treated for a spear wound likely caused by poaching. The leopard was treated for a bite wound and the zebra for injuries inflicted during a predation attempt.
