Meru Mobile Veterinary Unit Report for August 2020

Published on the 15th of September, 2020

The Eastern Conservation Area continues to experience dry weather conditions, resulting in a large percentage of vegetation drying out. All measures are being taken to prevent the risk of fire outbreak within the conservation area as this would devastating for the habitat and the wildlife. Wild animals continue to enjoy the remaining forage and water within the park.

During the month of August, the Unit relocated a lioness that was preying on livestock, relocated 3 rhinos that had moved outside of a protected area, vaccinated a security/tracker dog and de-snared a zebra. The movement out of the protected area by the 3 rhinos indicates there is the possibility of park infiltration by poachers, which calls for active monitoring of the boundary to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident so that necessary measures can be implemented.
