We have worked in the field in Kenya for over 40 years to save wildlife and are committed to protecting and preserving all manner of wild animals, from the tiniest antelope to the world’s largest land mammal, the elephant. Our projects span all aspects of animal welfare: We fund veterinary treatments to save injured wild animals, protect critical habitats, and patrol to stop poachers. We also rescue orphaned infant wild animals that would not survive without their mothers, raising them so they can one day return to live in the wild.
Animals we support
At the height of the poaching crisis, one elephant was killed every 15 minutes for their tusks. Poaching rates today are much lower but much of their habitat has also been destroyed or degraded, putting the squeeze on elephants. We are dedicated to the species long-term survival, and focus on habitat protection, veterinary care for elephants, stopping poaching and rescuing orphaned calves. The tallest land mammal on earth! There are various subspecies of giraffe but their overall populations have fallen as much as 40%, largely due to habitat loss and bushmeat poaching. As well as rescuing and raising orphaned giraffes like Kiko and Twiggy, our Anti-Poaching Teams patrol critical giraffe habitat to stop poachers, while Mobile Veterinary Units attend injured animals. Watch a treatment to help a snared giraffe unfold.
Black and white rhinos were once found throughout Africa but as a result of hunting and poaching for their horns, their populations plummeted. Though Black rhinos face extinction, fantastic strides have been made for the species recently in Kenya, which is home to around 900 individuals that live in the wild. Our Mobile Veterinary Units attend injured rhino, and we also rescue, raise and reintegrate orphaned calves. Meet Raha, an orphaned rhino in our care.
Aside from our Veterinary Initiative which directly supports animals in need, we also care for a number of orphaned animal species at any one time. To us, every wild life is precious and we come to the aid of any wild critters, however big or small. Many are identified and saved by community members or field personnel, to be hand-raised by our teams so they can one day return to the wild. It is a privilege to be the family for these animals who have lost everything and help them reclaim their rightful place in the wild.
Our Orphans’ Project is the world’s first, largest and most successful orphan elephant rehabilitation project in the world. Rescued orphan elephants, rhinos and giraffe are offered sanctuary in our care where they receive require round-the-clock milk feeds, nurturing Keeper and veterinary care so they can one day return to the wild in protected areas.
We fund six Mobile Vet Units and a Sky Vets initiative to provide urgent, rapid, in-the-field treatment to sick and injured wild animals across Kenya, with our partners, the Kenya Wildlife Service. Many animals are injured by the human hand, including by arrows, spears and snares. The teams also attend animals suffering from wounds or sickness caused by natural causes. Many of these animals are critically endangered or threatened, making every individual count.
In addition to SWT-funded Anti-Poaching Teams which work throughout conservation areas, we also manage and protect over 245,000 acres of land in Kenya in agreement with local partners. We support community initiatives to safeguard key animal habitats and our reforestation and tree planting initiatives rebuild degraded habitats for the survival and health of wildlife.
