Flying to Save a Snared Zebra's Life

Published on the 2nd of June, 2026

Snares are one of the deadliest threats facing Africa’s wildlife today.

Set by poachers to catch game for the illegal bushmeat trade, these indiscriminate traps are the first step in a commercial-scale, black market enterprise that threatens entire ecosystems.

Fortunately, this zebra was given a second chance. She was discovered by our rangers, with a wire noose slicing deep into her neck. She had clearly been suffering for a long time. Compromised as she was, zebras are elusive creatures and she managed to disappear into the bush. Roan took up the search from the air and eventually found her.

With her location confirmed, Taru piloted the helicopter with SWT/KWS Mobile South Vet Unit aboard. After KWS veterinarian Dr Lawi darted the patient from the air, the team landed and raced to her side.

Despite the severity of the injury, the treatment was a complete success and she is expected to make a full recovery. She was revived and joined her herd, who were waiting nearby.
