Homage to Tsavo

Spend one minute immersed in Tsavo — the most beautiful wilderness in the world.

The Greater Tsavo Conservation Area is Kenya’s largest wilderness and home to its biggest population of elephants. Spanning more than 42,000 square kilometres — an area roughly the size of Switzerland — it encompasses three national parks (Tsavo East, Tsavo West, and Chyulu Hills), along with a patchwork of vast reserves and ranchlands.

One could spend a lifetime in Tsavo and still not uncover all its mysteries. It is a mosaic of dense, misty woodlands in the north and open plains to the south. Tsavo is prime elephant country, but it is also the land of lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, buffalos, birds, and butterflies. In today’s world, it is the rarest of gems: a place where wildlife still reigns.

Although our conservation projects span Kenya, Tsavo is where we focus most of our efforts. It is a landscape inextricably linked to our identity: David Sheldrick, in whose memory the Trust was founded, was the founding warden of Tsavo East National Park. The better part of a century later, the work he and Daphne began continues to grow.
