Published on the 23rd of June, 2025

Speared in human-wildlife conflict and surrounded by cattle, cars, and hundreds of people — this lion was in a dire situation.

He was first reported in the evening by Big Life, struggling to move and covered in extensive injuries. The following morning, our pilot confirmed his location, and the SWT helicopter transported the SWT/KWS Mobile Vet Unit to the scene.

The team found the The team found the lion lying next to a school, deep within community land on Mbirikani Group Ranch. He had a serious spear wound to his shoulder, the result of human-wildlife conflict. His compromised state made him an easy target for rival male lions, who left him riddled with fight wounds.

After darting the patient, the team’s first order of business was to move him to a safer location. They transported him into protected wilderness and began treatment. While his injuries were extensive, Dr Lawi is hopeful he will make a full recovery. Should he require follow-up care, we will be ready to assist.

Our thanks to Big Life and Lion Guardians, who supported the treatment and will continue to monitor his progress.
