A Snared Giraffe, Emergency Resuscitation, and a Life Saved

Published on the 19th of March, 2026

You never know what a field operation will bring. This one started with a snared giraffe and ended with emergency resuscitation.

Our pilot spotted this giraffe during an aerial patrol. He had gotten caught in a poacher’s snare, which was slicing deep into the neck ligaments. We flew our SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit to the scene, and it was all hands on deck to safely bring the giraffe to the ground, cut away the wire snare, and treat the wound.

When a complication arose during the revival, the team stepped in to perform manual resuscitation. After a few tense moments, the giraffe came back to life, sprang to his feet, and raced into the bush. KWS vet Dr. Limo (speaking at the end) is confident he will make a full recovery.

This is our conservation work in action — 365 days a year, for 49 years and counting. None of it is possible without the generosity of people who care about Kenya's wildlife.
