Spiked Elephant Spotted and Treated in Mbuyuni

Published on the 16th of May, 2025

Spikes punctured this elephant’s foot several times — but thanks to a sighting from the sky, he got the help he needed.

It started during a routine aerial patrol, in an area we’ve been concentrating on due to human-elephant conflict. Our pilot spotted a bull with a telltale limp — and only once the SWT/KWS Vet Unit was on the ground did the extent of his injuries reveal themselves.

It turned out that the bull had trodden on spikes, which some farmers put around their land to deter elephants and other wildlife. A spike had pierced through his front right and back left foot, along with three more wounds on his legs.

The injuries were grave, but fortunately didn’t cause serious bone or joint damage. We can only imagine the pain he experienced, but Dr Limo is optimistic that he will recover.

And of course, we will continue to monitor the bull should he need follow-up treatment. In fact, our pilot spotted him today — he’s recovering on pace and moving more comfortably.
