Keepers' Diaries, August 2023

Umani Springs Reintegration Unit

The month began with an adorable display of Mwana’s bravery. In the morning, a troop of baboons came through, intent upon stealing the orphans’ lucerne pellets. Baby Mwana couldn’t stand for this brazen thievery and stood firm, protecting her territory. (Never mind that she is too small to eat pellets yet – she was protecting them on behalf of her beloved herd!) She charged at the baboons, trumpeting for effect, but she was heavily outnumbered. Still, the tiny elephant stood firm. When a big male baboon decided to challenge her, Kiasa and Enkesha knew it was time to intervene and chased the primates away.

01 August 2023

Amali found a spot next to Kapei at the pellet corner, but he would not let her eat in peace. He started pulling her tail and shoving her. Amali moved to the water trough, and Mwashoti followed her, putting his trunk over her back to comfort her. Amali felt happy with Mwashoti’s protection, so she went back to get some pellets.

A troop of baboons came through; they wanted to get pellets before the orphans finished all the food. Mwana decided she was going to protect the pellets from the baboons. She stood firm, protecting her territory. She charged at the baboons, trumpeting, but she was heavily outnumbered. One of the big males decided to challenge Mwana, but Kiasa and Enkesha quickly stepped in and chased the baboons away. Everyone was impressed with Mwana’s bravery.

The orphan herd moved out to the Kenzili area to browse for the day. They came back to their usual milk feeding clearing ready for their bottles. After their bottles, Amali and Mwashoti went to test the water for a mud bath. Kiasa, Enkesha, and Mwana were not interested. The water turned out to be too cold, so Mwashoti and Amali walked over to the dust pile instead. The others joined in for a dust bath. Then the whole herd walked towards the Chyulu area for more browsing and an afternoon rest in the shade.

02 August 2023

Late this morning, Quanza re-joined the orphan herd. Sonje and Lima Lima were still missing, which was unusual since the girls normally stayed together as a group. The Keepers later spotted Sonje and Lima Lima with a big wild bull. Sonje and Lima Lima were enjoying the attention, but Quanza remained very cautious of the wild bulls, so she kept her distance and joined the orphan herd instead.

The orphans went to browse on the Umani hills, and Jasiri and Faraja joined them. However, they soon noticed that Ngasha was also attempting to integrate himself. Jasiri and Faraja warned Ngasha to keep his distance since they knew how much he hassled Murera, Mwana, and the others. Amali got especially worried when Ngasha was close, and the older boys formed a barrier, protecting her from Ngasha’s games and allowing all the orphans to browse in peace.

03 August 2023

Today, Alamaya and his close friend Mwashoti surprised the Keepers by engaging in pushing games. The junior bulls are agemates and have been close friends for a long time, but they don't usually spar with each other. Today's games were a one-off; Kiombo and Maktao are the ones usually seen playing pushing games.

Kiombo observed Mwashoti and Alamaya and decided to follow suit. He initiated a pushing game with Maktao. Although Kiombo quickly became quite rough, he was determined to overpower Maktao. Recognising the situation, Kiasa and Enkesha intervened to rescue Maktao.

04 August 2023

Mwana was full of energy this morning. She saw some baboons eating the lucerne pellets, and she charged at them. The baboons dodged her while trying to collect as many pellets as possible. Mwana kept running after them. Kiasa and Enkesha saw Mwana struggling to chase the baboons away, so they came to her aid, worried that she might get hurt or provoke a big baboon into retaliating. Lima Lima and Quanza arrived as backup and chased all the baboons into the treetops. The older girls trumpeted loudly, but when Mwana tried, she couldn't replicate the same noise with her tiny trunk. She will learn to trumpet when she gets bigger.

Murera watched carefully from the sidelines as Mwana's capable nannies took control of the situation. She trusts them to look after her baby, but she remains vigilant and ready to step in if needed.

05 August 2023

Zongoloni returned to the orphan herd after spending a few days with some wild bulls who stayed away from the Umani area. Upon her return, Ngasha was the first to welcome her. He moved close, sniffed her, and embraced her with his trunk. Then, Jasiri came over to greet her, prompting Ngasha to step aside. Zongoloni then approached Mwana, who was standing with Kiasa and Enkesha. Zongoloni was happy to see little Mwana and her dear friend Kiasa.

Afterward, the orphan herd headed to the mud bath. They had a lot of fun games that day, with everyone displaying their best swimming tricks. Kiombo and Maktao were the only ones who didn't join in; they stayed behind, observing the others.

When it was time to return to the stockades, the orphans were all filled with joy, feeling cool and content. The entire herd walked slowly, ensuring that Murera could keep up with them.

Just before reaching the stockades, a large wild family appeared, accompanied by tiny babies. The wild herd was on its way to the lucerne corner to grab some pellets before the orphans could finish everything. Sonje and Alamaya attempted to eat the hay and pellets that were left out, but the wild herd chased them away.

06 August 2023

A wild herd occupied the pellet corner this morning. Unfortunately, the females in this herd were unfriendly toward the orphans. They chased Sonje away. When Mwashoti and Alamaya appeared, they too were chased away. One female, in particular, was hostile toward the two junior bulls, and when she caught them trying to sneak back to the orphan herd, she chased them very far. The Umani herd was now very cautious, and they kept well away from the pellet corner. The Keepers decided to put pellets out in a different location so the orphans would not miss out. They were very happy about this decision.

Later in the afternoon, the night clubbers – Lima Lima, Quanza, Sonje, Mwashoti, and Alamaya – moved to the Umani springs for a drink of water. Then they left together, ready for their night out. Although they had to be careful not to bump into the wild friends that had taken over the pellet corner this morning. Lima Lima tried to persuade Sonje to go to the Chyulu area with her, but Sonje refused, so Lima Lima recruited Zongoloni instead.

07 August 2023

The orphans heard loud trumpets coming from the Umani Hills. Sonje and Quanza raised their trunks, trying to figure out who was making all the noise. Lima Lima started walking towards the trumpeting to investigate, and Sonje went with her. Lima Lima loves being informed and wants to know who is around, along with all the news and gossip. They discovered that it was Ngasha and Faraja fighting with wild bulls. Lima Lima attempted to separate them. One bull agreed, but then he started chasing Lima Lima, taking a liking to her. Lima Lima ran back towards the orphan herd. Before she reached the Keepers, Zongoloni appeared with backup to chase the bull away. The bull changed his plans and went off in the opposite direction. The Keepers think he must have smelled them and been nervous around humans.

08 August 2023

The chilly weather has persisted longer this season, and the babies haven't been enjoying the mud bath as much. They test the water with their trunks, but then they have a drink and move on; they don't wallow or swim. Today, Zongoloni and Sonje were leading the orphan herd. They walked over to the mud bath with purpose, as if they were going to persuade everyone to swim, but then they found the water was too cold. The Keepers called the orphans over to the dust pile instead. The babies were all happy to play in the dust pile. Sonje and Ngasha were throwing lots of dust up over their backs, creating dust clouds that covered everyone. All the orphans were now the same brown colour as the dust pile.

The orphans walked back into the bushes to browse and rest in the shade. There were some baboons screaming in the trees, which scared Mwana. She went looking for Murera, while all her nannies came running to her rescue. Murera went to find the Keepers, forcing them to check why the baboons were screaming. The baboons had a reason to scream so loudly; there was a leopard sleeping in one of the trees.

09 August 2023

Chasing baboons has become Mwana's favourite game. First thing this morning, cheeky Mwana started trumpeting and charging at the baboons with her little ears flared. Murera and Mwana's nannies are always close by in case the baboons get defensive or do not respect little Mwana's efforts. The baboons move off very quickly when they see the bigger elephants getting involved. The baboons fled to the trees, leaving little Mwana practising her trumpeting at the base.

After seeing his rival, Jasiri, join the herd, Ngasha decided to leave. He knew his chances of being allowed to stay within the herd were minimal, and he did not feel like fighting today. Jasiri and Faraja always band together and discipline Ngasha, which he does not appreciate.

10 August 2023

Ziwa and his family arrived later in the morning, but all the pellets were finished. Ziwa came to the gate to plead with the Keepers for some pellets.

A wild herd arrived at the pellet corner just as the orphan herd was returning to the stockades for the evening. The first to arrive were two wild bulls, and Sonje and Faraja joined them with no issues. Then, Quanza and Mwashoti did the same. The problem started when wild females with tiny babies arrived; they were very possessive over the food. The females chased Quanza, Mwashoti, Sonje, and Faraja away. The Keepers put out hay and lucerne pellets away from the wild herd so the orphans could eat in peace.

The wild herd spent the entire night at the pellet corner and left just as the orphans were starting to wake up the next morning.

11 August 2023

The Keepers treated the orphans this morning by placing fresh greens and fresh lucerne hay at the milk feeding glade. The elephants were very happy.

Ngasha took a bunch of hay and moved away from the herd so that he wouldn't have to share. Mwashoti arrived late and found everyone busy eating, with no space for him. He went to join Ngasha, but Ngasha turned him away very aggressively. So, Mwashoti decided to ask Murera for help, and being a good friend, Murera agreed to share with him. Mwana was also busy copying her nannies, attempting to pick up hay with her trunk.

Kapei and Amali were walking over to join Mwashoti, but Maktao moved to stop them and then started trying to climb on Amali. Amali was unhappy about this, and both the Keepers and Mwashoti came to her rescue, chasing Maktao away. He needs to play his games with orphans his own size.

12 August 2023

The orphans were very playful this morning, engaging in lots of games and having fun until Kiombo and Maktao started a serious fight. They were separated before they could harm each other. The fight began over an acacia branch that Sonje had pulled down.

Jasiri and Ngasha then began a tug of war with the same branch, which had been left on the ground. Zongoloni and Quanza got involved and tried to separate Jasiri and Ngasha, but the two boys wouldn't listen. Ngasha stood his ground and warned Zongoloni not to interfere. Wisely, Zongoloni listened and left them to their fight.

Zongoloni moved over to Murera and Mwana to take up nanny duties, allowing Murera to have a break to rest and relax. She found that Kiasa and Enkesha were already looking after Mwana and teaching her what to browse on, so she joined them.

13 August 2023

Today, a wild herd with many babies the same age as Mwana passed through. The mothers in the wild herd were unfriendly towards the orphan herd, because they were protective of their babies. They took over the orphans' territory and ensured that the orphan herd kept their distance.

A couple of wild bulls attempted to join the wild herd, but the mothers were not pleased with the intrusion. They trumpeted loudly and scattered, taking their babies with them. They shielded their babies under their bellies to keep them safe. One baby was running so fast that it fell, but luckily, the mother was quick to pick it up. The bulls heeded the warning and left the herd alone. Once the mothers were sure all the babies were safe, the wild herd settled down again.

In response, the orphan herd decided to move away for the day. Mwana and her nannies took the lead, with Sonje at the back, keeping a watchful eye on everyone. Mwana was playful and full of energy, enjoying herself as she charged at the bushes.

14 August 2023

The orphan herd woke up very happy this morning, excited to leave the stockades and meet up with their nightclubber friends. The nightclubbers had arrived earlier and were eating pellets in the lucerne corner. Amali and Kapei rushed over to the pellet corner, concerned that the others might finish all the pellets.

Kapei started giving Amali a hard time, pulling her tail and pushing her away from the pellets. Amali's mood changed, and she became very upset and annoyed with Kapei. She moved to where Murera, Mwana, and the nannies were browsing. The older females surrounded Amali, making it safe for her and keeping all the boisterous boys away.

The herd then moved to the Kenzili area, where they found fresh acacia branches to feed on. A wild herd had passed through during the night and pulled down many branches. The bushbuck and baboons were happily feeding on the acacia branches until Sonje and Kiombo chased them off so the orphans could browse on the branches.

Murera grew tired of Mwana suckling on her, so she denied her. Then Mwana spotted Sonje and abandoned Enkesha and Kiasa, making her way to Sonje for comfort. She even tried to suckle from Sonje, but of course with no success.

15 August 2023

This morning, a junior wild bull joined Sonje at the pellet-eating corner. When the orphans and the Keepers came out of the stockades, the young bull disappeared into the bushes. Then, a much larger bull with long tusks emerged from the bushes and joined the orphan herd. The wild bull was friendly and accommodating to the babies. Sonje began to move around, getting the orphan herd ready to start their day, and the wild bull moved alongside her, acting as an escort.

Kiasa and Enkesha started to follow Sonje, and they collected Mwana along the way. Mwana had already fed from Murera, but she was feeling greedy this morning and tried to feed from Sonje too, even though Sonje had no milk.

Later, in the Kenzili area, Kiombo and Maktao started their pushing games. Kiombo initiated the game by pushing Maktao, and Maktao pushed back. They were play-fighting, but Enkesha rushed in to stop them, thinking it was a serious fight. The game was stopped when Kiasa came to back up Enkesha.

16 August 2023

Mwana is taking advantage of being in the stockades at night because she can stay in close proximity to her mother, allowing her to feed whenever she wants. Murera sometimes gets tired and pushes Mwana away from nursing, but Mwana demands more and cries loudly.

During the night, Quanza and Zongoloni came to the stockade gates to find out why Mwana was crying. Mwana stopped making noise when Murera allowed her to feed again.

During the day, Mwana spent most of her time with her nannies so that Murera could move around more freely to browse after a long night of breastfeeding.

17 August 2023

Amali and Mwana were walking down the path together when a dik-dik crossed their path. Then another dik-dik, who was looking for its friend, ran into the two little girls. Amali made a loud noise, calling for help. The whole herd rushed over to save the babies. By the time the herd arrived, the dik-dik had disappeared, so the older females were left wondering what had happened and why Amali was screaming.

The babies settled down after this morning's encounter. Sonje and Zongoloni continued leading the herd to the Kenzili area for fresh vegetation to browse on.

Later in the day, the herd stopped at the waterhole. It had been a very hot day, so all the babies went swimming to cool off. The Keepers kept Ngasha and Faraja away from the mud bath while the babies swam. The two boys waited on the side, scratching their bellies on a soil mound. Lima Lima, Kiasa, and Enkesha took Mwana to teach her all the swimming tricks.

18 August 2023

Early this morning, two bulls came to the pellet corner in search of food. Upon their arrival, they discovered a large herd of buffaloes with the same idea. The buffaloes were initially reluctant to move, but eventually, they allowed the two bulls to join them and feed on some of the lucerne. These wild animals understood the hardship of finding enough food during the dry season and chose not to deny each other access to the lucerne.

The Umani springs were bustling with activity today. There was another wild bull, more buffaloes, and even some zebras drinking water. However, the zebras hastily departed when they spotted the orphans and the Keepers approaching the springs.

19 August 2023

Faraja and Ngasha had a fight this morning. They both arrived at the stockades simultaneously, and both of them flared their ears, displaying aggression towards each other while seeking dominance and respect. Ngasha initiated a charge toward Faraja in an attempt to intimidate him. Faraja, taken by surprise, stepped back a few times, which gave Ngasha the confidence to chase Faraja far away from the herd.

Ngasha's behaviour frightened Murera and the older girls, prompting them to move Mwana, Amali, and Kapei away from Ngasha, leaving him on his own. Faraja rejoined the orphan herd to protect them, and if Ngasha were to return, he would be ready to fight with Faraja and ensure the safety of the babies.

Amali and Mwashoti browsed together, which made Amali feel very happy and secure. Mwashoti has a strong bond with Amali and always protects her, especially from the other orphans who may try to push her around.

20 August 2023

The baboons had a challenging morning. They came to eat the leftover pellets, but the orphan herd was still milling around, picking through the pellets. Mwana noticed the baboons waiting for their turn and called Zongoloni and Enkesha for backup to chase the baboons away. Kiasa and Lima Lima joined in too. The elephants successfully chased the baboons out of sight, and Mwana felt very happy and accomplished.

Murera trumpeted, calling her baby back, and Kiasa and Lima Lima quickly escorted Mwana back to her mother. Mwana was very hungry from all her chasing and began to feed.

The midday sun was scorching, and the orphan herd rushed to cool off in the mud bath. Mwana remained the little princess of the Umani herd; she led the orphans to the mud bath and was the first one in. All attention was on her, and she received special treatment from the older girls, giving her priority over the best spots in the mud bath.

After cooling off, the orphan herd moved to the dust bath. Mwana, Amali, and Kapei climbed to the top of the dust pile and had their own game, while the other orphans threw dust over their backs.

21 August 2023

Ngasha was particularly annoying today. He kept chasing Sonje, Lima Lima, and Quanza, making the whole herd uncomfortable and on edge. Murera, Kiasa, Enkesha, and Mwana moved away from the others to keep little Mwana safe. Fortunately, Ngasha's rival, Jasiri, arrived with Faraja. Ngasha immediately panicked and left the herd, heading towards the Chyulu area and not being seen for the rest of the day. The Umani herd could now enjoy browsing in a peaceful environment.

Mwana and her nannies later went for a mud bath, getting straight in and swimming like hippos. Maktao and Kiombo joined in, with Maktao finding a muddy bank to put his head on while in the water. Kiombo came swimming next to Maktao, and Maktao moved closer to Kiombo, using him like a pillow. Kiasa accidentally bumped Amali, which startled her and made a funny trumpeting sound. The older females came to check on her but found that everything was okay.

22 August 2023

While the orphan herd was busy browsing on the slopes of the Umani hills, a wild bull joined them. He first greeted Lima Lima and Zongoloni, then followed the girls to the rest of the herd. The wild bull was very gentle and friendly, not bothering the babies, so Sonje welcomed him into the herd. However, when he began showing interest in Sonje and Quanza, they started avoiding him. Realising this, the bull moved away, losing interest in them as well.

Amali, Kiasa, Enkesha, and Mwana stayed with Mwashoti and Murera, who were pulling down branches to feed on. They kept away from the wild bull to ensure the babies' safety.

The wild bull later joined Faraja and Alamaya, and they followed him into the forest. Further into the forest, Faraja, Alamaya, and their new friend found themselves in trouble with another aggressive wild bull. The Keepers could hear lots of loud trumpeting, so they kept the herd away from the thickest part of the forest for their safety.

Amali got scared when she spotted a herd of zebras in a grassy clearing. She warned Kapei, and they ran to Quanza and Lima Lima for protection.

23 August 2023

There are currently many wild herds in the area. They are mostly friendly and always come to greet Sonje and Lima Lima. However, the older females in the Umani herd are more concerned with protecting Amali, Kapei, and especially tiny Mwana than making friends with the wild elephants.

The Umani females engage in conversation with the wild elephants but quickly shift their attention to the babies in the orphan herd, leaving the wild elephants to their own devices. When the wild herd saw the Keepers, they gave up on trying to make friends and rushed into the bushes.

Alamaya joined the herd after the wild elephants had already left. He is always on his own mission, moving quietly and at his own pace. He joined the herd and was welcomed by his close friend Mwashoti.

Alamaya picked up a stick that he was dragging on the ground. Mwashoti also wanted the stick, but Alamaya defended his new toy. They had a little pushing match, but Alamaya quickly won, and Mwashoti gave up, leaving Alamaya with his stick.

After the orphans finished their midday bottle feeding, Sonje led the herd to the mud bath. The Keepers saw two wild bulls heading to the mud bath and kept their distance for safety reasons, allowing the orphans to make friends with the wild elephants. Mwana confidently walked straight up to the wild bulls, perhaps mistaking them for part of the orphan herd. Luckily, the bulls welcomed her and were very friendly and gentle.

24 August 2023

Another wild herd visited today. This herd had some very tiny babies, including one that was still breastfeeding from its mother. The mother grew tired of the baby suckling and pushed it away, similar to how Murera sometimes does. The baby cried at being denied milk.

Murera, Kiasa, and Enkesha heard the noise and mistakenly thought it was Mwana. They panicked and started looking for her. To their relief, they found Mwana happily playing with Kiombo, Amali, and Kapei in a dust pile. Mwana's nannies all moved closer to her to ensure her safety.

25 August 2023

Ngasha is quite lazy and prefers to stay close to the stockades and the lodge. He doesn't like travelling long distances to find food, unlike the rest of the herd and wild elephants, who know they must sometimes travel for fresh vegetation. Even little Mwana doesn't complain about the long walks to find food.

Alamaya and Mwashoti tried to convince Ngasha to join them on a little adventure, but Ngasha refused and warned them to leave him alone.

Later in the day, Mwana took the lead, walking out in front towards the waterhole. Her nannies followed closely behind, ensuring her safety. Mwana was the first one in the mud bath, where she playfully kicked and splashed water around. After mimicking the older elephants, Mwana has become an expert swimmer. Maktao and Kiombo decided to skip the mud bath, finding the water too cold. This made the Keepers wonder why Mwana was having such a good time if the water was so cold.

26 August 2023

Little Mwana spotted a troop of baboons approaching the pellet corner. She flared her ears and chased them, warning them not to come close. One of the baby baboons didn't realise what Mwana was doing and got very close to the elephants. This frightened the baboon troop, and they all began alarming and calling the baby baboon back. Murera saw what was happening and came to take Mwana away with her to prevent her from causing trouble for the baboons.

Faraja, Alamaya, and Mwashoti separated from the herd after the mud bath.

After Mwana got out of the water, she was very hungry. She initially tried to suckle from Sonje but quickly moved to her mother. The orphans rested in the shade before continuing their browsing for the rest of the afternoon.

Today, we relocated Ngasha to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in the hopes that the older bulls there will be able to teach him how to behave. Ngasha never quite learned his manners; he did not listen to the Keepers or the other elephants. Only Jasiri could keep him in line, but as an ex-orphan, Jasiri is not always with the herd. As he grew bigger, Ngasha became too rowdy for our small herd in the Kibwezi Forest. We believe that Tsavo will be a better place for him, with its vast spaces and large populations of bulls. Hopefully, Ngasha will learn to respect other elephants.

27 August 2023

Alamaya and Mwashoti joined the herd later in the day. They couldn't find Ngasha anywhere, so they went looking for him. Alamaya reported to Faraja, who had been browsing in the Chyulu area, and asked if he had seen Ngasha. Faraja was also in disbelief that Ngasha had gone.

There was a sense of celebration among the females and the babies. Murera and Faraja, in particular, were glad to know they wouldn't have to worry about being pushed around or Ngasha playing too rough with the babies.

The orphans had a fun mud bath session today without Ngasha. The environment was safe and friendly, with no pushing or fighting. Nobody wanted to leave the mud bath, and eventually, the Keepers had to call the orphans out of the mud bath to the dust pile to dry up before they moved off into the forest to browse.

28 August 2023

The unpredictable rains in recent years have made it more difficult for the animals in the area to determine where to find food and when to move closer to the Umani springs and the Kibwezi forest.

Today, the baboons and the bushbucks initially seemed to be getting along as friends. The baboons were in the treetops, shaking down acacia pods for the bushbucks below. However, everything changed when one of the large male baboons ate a baby bushbuck.

Amali was walking toward the acacia trees when she heard screaming noises and alarm calls from the bushbucks. She quickly spun around and ran back to the protection of the herd. The Keepers rushed to the scene but found that the baby bushbuck was already dead.

Mwana did not engage in her usual chasing games with the baboons; instead, she was kept moving up front, surrounded by her nannies. Murera and Mwashoti stayed at the back, ensuring she was protected from all angles.

Lima Lima and Faraja led the orphan herd to the Chyulu region to find more fresh vegetation to browse on. Lima Lima displayed her wisdom and intelligence again today when she returned to warn the Keepers about a wild herd of elephants that were approaching. The Keepers were able to move away and watch from a safe distance. Amali, along with Kapei, attempted to join the wild herd, but Quanza was quick to collect them, warning them that the wild elephants were not part of the Umani herd.

29 August 2023

The orphans were playing with the baboons this morning, charging at all the bushes with lots of trumpeting and running around. Faraja and Kapei were the most enthusiastic. Sonje tried to stop them, explaining that they had charged enough, but they didn't want to listen. Amali stayed close to Mwashoti for protection from all the commotion, but then Quanza came and insisted on taking Amali with her. Amali gave in and followed Quanza, so Mwashoti went to join his old friend Murera, who happily welcomed him.

Lima Lima and Zongoloni joined the herd later in the day when the orphans were already out browsing. The Keepers initially worried that Lima Lima had come to warn them of a wild herd but quickly realised she had just come to greet them.

Lima Lima and Zongoloni heard Mwana shouting and rushed over to check on her. They found her with Kiasa, who was trying to teach her how to trumpet.

30 August 2023

Sonje remains a dedicated leader for the Umani herd, but since Murera has had a baby, Sonje seems very interested in having one of her own. She spends much more time with wild bulls and is more welcoming to them than she used to be. Today, Sonje arrived with two wild bulls, while Mwashoti, Faraja, and Alamaya watched from a distance. Mature wild bulls are generally not friendly toward junior bulls, especially when females are close by.

Kiasa and Enkesha are very serious little nannies; they hardly ever give the older females in the herd a chance to play with Mwana. They like to occupy all her attention. Today was no different.

Zongoloni and Lima Lima joined the herd late again today, finding them in the Kenzili area while browsing.

Mwana rushed to the mud bath in the afternoon, and though Murera tried to get her to wait, Mwana wouldn't listen. She jumped in and had a fun time playing with Kiasa and Enkesha. Fortunately, Sonje and her male friends did not come to the mud bath while the orphans were swimming.

31 August 2023

Today was very hot, and the orphans didn't want to leave the shade of the trees. They spent the heat of the day resting in the shade. Once it had cooled down, they walked towards the Chyulu area to browse.

They came across Ziwa and his herd. Ziwa came up to greet Lima Lima and Quanza, but then he started to push Quanza around. She was not happy with this and left him to rejoin his wild family.

In the evening, as the orphans were walking back to the stockades, Kapei pushed Amali from behind. Amali was upset by this and ran to Maktao for protection. Maktao chased Kapei, trying to discipline him. Kapei then moved away from Amali and filed back into the line further back. Mwana was at the front with Kiasa and Enkesha, while Murera walked slowly at the back.
