Keepers' Diaries, December 2023

Umani Springs Reintegration Unit

The month began with Maktao cleverly forcing games upon his best friend. In the morning, ever so innocently, he wrapped his trunk around Kiombo’s tail and pulled hard. This was a clever tactic to offend Kiombo, so that he would react and start pushing Maktao. However, the plan did not pan out and Kiombo diligently ignored him. He was not ready to play.

01 December 2023

Faraja returned home today after a very long stay away from the orphan herd. Even the other orphans were unaware of where Faraja had been. He moved into the herd very silently from the bushes, surprising the Keepers with his arrival. The place he came from remained unknown to everyone.

Murera observed Faraja attempting to get close to baby Mwana and Amali. Murera was uncomfortable with this, and as luck had it, her usual support team of nannies was not around. The clever mother rumbled to call her daughter back to her side. Upon hearing Murera’s call, Mwana moved over to her, followed closely by Amali, who was dutifully serving as the baby's security. Usual nannies Enkesha and Kiasa had left Amali in charge, as they climbed to the top of the hills for more browsing in the Kenzili area.

Maktao began the usual playing games by holding Kiombo’s tail. This was a clever tactic to offend Kiombo, so that he would turn around to start pushing Maktao — Maktao was very ready, waiting for him. However, the plan did not pan out and Kiombo diligently ignored him. He was not ready to play.

02 December 2023

The herd emerged, appearing very ready and happy for the new day. The babies were running around, attempting to chase away some baboons trying to enter the herd. Little Amali showed Mwana how to banish them from sight, and other nannies gave the baboons a hard chase to ensure they left the area. Alamaya and Mwashoti, being the older boys, joined in with loud trumpets to keep the big baboons away from the babies. Meanwhile, Sonje, Limalima, and Zongoloni were behind, ensuring everything was well from the rear.

Once the place was cleared of baboons, the elephants climbed to the top of the hills, encountering some buffalos in a deep slumber. Sonje and Lima Lima tried to wake them up by charging and trumpeting, but one older buffalo continued to sleep. Eventually, they gave up their mission and let him rest in peace.

Later, the orphans were led to the waterhole by Enkesha and Kiasa, who wanted Mwana to take a bath as it was getting somewhat hot. When the baby saw the nannies already splashing their bodies, she dove in, compelling those who were still not close to the waterhole to come and join in the fun. Only Sonje chose to skip swimming today.

03 December 2023

Many buffaloes came around the mud bath area for wallowing, and a couple tried to block the orphans' entry to the bottle-feeding point and then to the waterhole. Four stood upright, watching the elephants approaching. Amali walked to the side where one buffalo was still lying in the waterhole, and Kiombo followed to assist her. When Sonje and other babies noticed that the buffalo was not giving way, they rushed over to help Amali and her friends. Feeling insecure, the buffaloes ran back to the Kibwezi Forest, leaving the orphans in peace.

Murera and her friends returned to the waterhole and wallowed in the same spot where the buffaloes had left. Mwana rolled over everybody, trying to swim and climbing on top of the nannies to enjoy her time in the swimming pool. Maktao and Enkesha joined Amali at a fallen log outside the water. The log turned out to be the perfect spot for Amali to scratch her bottom. However, when Kiombo arrived at the same log, Amali went over to Mwana. Meanwhile, Murera was busy browsing alongside Mwashoti and Quanza, leaving the baby to be with Amali.

Later, Kapei attempted to follow Amali from behind, but Enkesha stopped him. Enkesha knows the young bull’s tricks and suspected that he would try to push her.

04 December 2023

It was a very good morning today, as the rain that fell overnight stopped by dawn. The babies could begin their new day in good form. Just like the other morning, baboons tried to intercept the food by the side gate, but they were met by Mwana and her little nannies, who blocked them from coming any closer. The orphaned enjoyed their morning treats in peace before heading towards the Kenzili area.

However, Sonje and Quanza did not want the babies to go there. Sonje, with the help of Lima Lima, changed direction, and they moved to the Chyulu side through Umani Springs. Little nanny Amali got a rude awakening when she went for a drink, only to discover a crocodile outside the water on dry land.

Alamaya and Mwashoti linked up with the herd after catching their scent. Lima Lima and Sonje went to welcome the boys. A few minutes later, the Keepers heard loud shouts from the elephants — this was a reception celebration, led by Amali, after seeing Sonje and Lima Lima coming back for them.

05 December 2023

The elephants woke up very early due to heavy rain that started in the wee hours. The babies couldn't go back to sleep because of the noisy raindrops on the rooftops. Kiasa kept jumping on the walls, trying to reach Mwana from her room, as she heard that Mwana was also uncomfortable with the clatter. While Kiasa worried about the baby, Murera was unbothered — she knows that Mwana needs to get used to such disruptions.

Enkesha also began pulling at her gate, attempting to get to the baby. In the end, the Keepers opened the gates much earlier than usual, so everyone could be together and stop fretting.

Outside the stockade, Lima Lima and Quanza arrived from the Kibwezi Forest, moving directly to where Mwana was trying to imitate Enkesha scratching on a rock. They surrounded Mwana with their trunks and moved her away to their side. They were jealous of all the time that Enkesha and Kiasa had already spent with Mwana that morning and wanted her all to themselves.

06 December 2023

Jasiri and Ziwa joined the orphans today, leaving the keepers to wonder why Ziwa wasn't with his usual wild herd. Instead of walking back with Jasiri and the orphans, Ziwa stayed close. After a few minutes, however, some members of Ziwa's wild herd arrived and demanded that he join them. Ziwa was still greeting his human-elephant family when the matriarch of his group, an old female elephant, warned that he must join them or be left behind. Ziwa, loyal to his herd, left the orphans and joined his wild companions.

Meanwhile, Enkesha, Kiombo, and Amali were playing on the hills with Mwana. Zongoloni kept a close eye on them, watching for any rough play around the young baby girl. When Mwana sneezed out some dust, Zongoloni rushed over to her, thinking someone had pushed her — a very diligent nanny!

07 December 2023

The babies headed out to Chyulu today earlier than usual, guided by Murera and the other older females. Amali lagged behind, scratching from a very small stick. When she finished, she rushed ahead to join Murera and Mwana. Kiasa and Enkesha also flanked the baby, as usual.

Crested crane birds flew close to the tall grass around the swamp where the orphans were busy enjoying the green grass. The cranes hid when they saw the elephants heading towards them — but Lima Lima and Kiombo unwittingly browsed next to their hiding place. Lima Lima found three eggs after one crane flew away from her nest. Luckily, Lima Lima stopped over the eggs and didn't crush them.

On the Chyulu hills, the elephants came across more buffaloes sleeping in the open grass fields. The orphans got scared and ran away. The Keepers had a hard time calling them back. Murera, not wanting to stop the hasty retreat, continued to run away with her baby. Eventually, she calmed down and Mwana promptly set about nursing.

08 December 2023

The team had an exceptionally playful time today, with trumpetings, playfightings, and various yoga games. Almost every baby was involved, making it a busy and lively day. The energy was infectious, and Kiombo, along with his friend Maktao, was particularly active. Kiombo got overwhelmed by Maktao's energy and had to stop him by chewing his tail, prompting Maktao to leave him alone and run away.

Lima Lima, Zongoloni, and Quanza teamed up with Alamaya to pull down tall branches for browsing. While their work blocked the path to the feeding area, Enkesha could not be deterred: She is very punctual and never fails to report for her meal promptly at 11 o’clock.

Surprisingly, Murera decided to forgo her milk bottle today. Little Amali took advantage of the situation and got an extra bottle. Although Mwana does not get bottles (she nurses from her mother, after all) she always likes to join the orphans as they get fed. Because Murera stayed behind, Amali chaperoned Mwana until everyone reconvened.

Later, all the babies moved to the ant hill for more playtime. After all the rain, the ant hill was now very slippery and muddy, creating a perfect playground for the babies.

09 December 2023

Zongoloni decided today was the day for her, Alamaya, and Mwashoti to join their wild friends in the Chyulu area. After spending some time with the dependent orphans, she was ready to explore and fraternise with wild elephants. Hearing loud trumpets of wild elephants in the distance, Zongoloni shepherded Mwashoti and Alamaya off to the Chyulus.

Jasiri was among the wild elephants, leading to a very happy reunion after some time apart. Quanza and Sonje followed Zongoloni to Chyulu, but later decided they were too far from the babies, particularly Mwana. Both head girls turned back to check on the baby.

Mwana, who turned nine months old today, seemed exceptionally happy and playful. The Keepers thought she might even be aware that today was her special day, as she seemed to have an extra spring in her step. Kapei and Kiombo engaged in playful fighting nearby, but when Kiombo started pushing Kapei towards Mwana, Murera put an end to the game.

10 December 2023

Lima Lima arrived a bit late this morning and came barreling in, afraid she had missed things. However, all her drama was for naught, as the orphans were just emerging from their bedrooms. She was welcomed with big rumbles and trumpeting from the entire herd. A few minutes later, Quanza also came tearing out of the thick bushes. She went straight to Amali, who was scratching herself on a small stick. Quanza patiently waited for Amali to finish scratching before they walked together.

After the midday bottle feeding, Kapei took off into the bushes, hoping some of the babies would follow him as a leader. However, only Maktao joined him, and Kapei turned back when he realised none of the larger group was following him. Instead, they had joined the bigger herd led by both matriarchs.

While in the bushes, some antelopes approached Kapei and Maktao. When Kapei spotted the antelopes, he got a fright, as they were closer than he expected. He ran back to the Keepers, with Maktao in tow.

11 December 2023

The peaceful morning was abruptly cut short when buffaloes invaded the bushes where the elephants were busy browsing and playing. Kapei found himself in a running situation, joining the others when he saw everyone running. No one could stop to help the others, as everyone seemed to be in their own panic.

With the help of calm, cool and collected Enkesha, the Keepers managed to stop Murera and Amali. They moved away from the big herd of buffaloes to ensure Murera and her baby were safe. Amali, acting like a big sister to Mwana, remained loyal and protective even amidst a scary situation, ensuring Mwana's safety during the commotion.

As they returned home, Amali continued to escort Mwana to her room, along with Murera. Once in her room, Amali found Kapei trying to steal her greens, pulling them to his side and leaving Amali with very little food. Amali turned her trunk between wooden posts to reclaim her greens, leading to a playful fight with Kapei. In the end, she managed to bring all her branches back to her room, away from Kapei.

12 December 2023

Only half of the nightclubbers returned home in the morning. Sonje, Lima Lima, and Quanza linked up with the dependent orphans, while all the boys were away with Zongoloni, who had led them too far to return on time.

Murera was in a good mood. She was very accommodating to Sonje, Lima Lima, and Quanza. This was uncharacteristic; Murera is not a ‘morning elephant’ and often wakes up in a bad mood. Today, however, she was friendly, and Sonje took her baby round to the hills for more browsing.

Amali and Kiasa found themselves left far behind, playing down the hills. When Kiasa realised that the herd had moved on without them, she blew a single trumpet to signal their location to Sonje and the others. The response was a trumpet from the hill, guiding the girls in the right direction. Eventually, Kiasa and Amali joined the orphans on top of the Kenze Hills, where there was plenty of food.

Enkesha welcomed Kiasa back and took her around to Mwana. After spotting the baby, Kiasa felt comfortable and moved to her own side for more food. She found Mwashoti pulling down a heavy branch to eat. When Mwashoti saw Kiasa attempting to pull down a branch as well, he didn't want to share and got a bit rough with Kiasa, showing his greediness.

13 December 2023

The Kibwezi Forest woke up to early rain. Some babies hesitated to leave their rooms due to the noise from the rain on the rooftops, which indicated how wet it was outside. The Keepers waited with their umbrellas for the rain to stop, but it continued until very late, eventually forcing them to open the gates.

Amali and Kapei were the first ones to venture out, running and making sharp corners to the gate. Unfortunately, Kapei slipped and fell into the muddy water. The other outside babies came to the gate to help Kapei get up, calling their friends for assistance. Murera, who was behind Kapei, didn't bother to help. She walked outside, leaving Kapei with the Keepers and Quanza, who came to his aid.

Mwana and Amali moved around, searching for pellets, but found nothing. The Keepers didn't put out pellets for the babies today, due to the heavy rains. Pellets would have gotten wet and smelly, which wouldn't have been good for the babies. However, Mwana and Amali continued searching, unaware of the reason behind the absence of pellets.

14 December 2023

The morning started cheerfully, with Sonje, Lima Lima, and Quanza waiting outside for the dependent herd. There was a big excitement as everyone welcomed the big girls back. Sonje ran to Mwana, while Quanza followed to meet Amali. Lima Lima headed to the scratching wall to attend to her own needs, after realising that the baby was already crowded by many nannies.

Murera and her group took off to the Kenze Hills for more greens, and both babies followed them. Alamaya and Faraja arrived later, but the females, led by Sonje and Murera, didn't wait for them. Kapei rounded on Amali and play-mounted her, but Amali was not happy about it. Her yell prompted Quanza and Enkesha to rush over and come to her aid. Kapei, looking sheepish, moved off, while Amali sidled over to Mwana.

15 December 2023

The orphans heard some unusual noises, which unsettled Amali, Kapei, and Kiasa. They raised their trunks to smell and understand what was happening nearby. The trio sought protection by heading toward the larger elephants. Sonje, Quanza, and Lima Lima rumbled to gather the babies. Meanwhile, Murera went to where the Keepers were still seated, hoping Lima Lima would find the source of the discomfort and come up with a solution for the herd.

Clever Lima Lima investigated and discovered that a male bushbuck and his girlfriends were the source of the noise. Amali, Kapei, and Kiasa thought it was something more threatening, but Lima Lima's return eased their concerns. Once Lima Lima started pulling branches to eat, the Keepers knew everything was fine.

16 December 2023

As Christmas Day draws closer, some of the boys, Jasiri, Alamaya, and Ziwa, seem to be exploring and planning places to visit for the holiday. For the past week, they have been missing. The team spotted them with a big wild herd, but when called by name, they showed no interest in coming over to the dependent orphans.

Only Ziwa attempted to respond, moving towards the Keepers when called. However, a protective female stood in his way, blocking him from approaching the Keepers. It seemed his wild companions didn't want him to leave them — Ziwa is very popular! Ziwa chose to stay with them and not cause any drama.

Meanwhile, Murera took a break to nurse Mwana. Afterwards, she stepped away, leaving the baby with Kiasa. Amali joined Kiasa and Enkesha, taking Mwana into the bushes. Later, they found a waterhole which provided the stage for an excellent swimming session.

17 December 2023

With the heavy rain falling across the Kibwezi Forest, the elephants have more options for water sources than usual. However, despite the availability of water, Sonje and her team chose not to walk towards the waterholes. Instead, they decided to move away, possibly towards the Chyulu Hills.

Today, Faraja returned with some of his friends, including Mwashoti, Lima Lima, and Alamaya. Sonje and Quanza were happy to see Faraja again, while Murera was delighted to be reunited with Mwashoti. Despite their return, none of the elephants went to the waterhole. They all moved towards the Chyulu Hills, raising concerns among the Keepers that the boys might disappear again after just one day.

Although the Keepers were worried, they left the boys, hoping they would come back for the Christmas celebration on the 25th of December, just a week away. The Keepers were planning a surprise for the elephants on that special day.

Sonje took charge of Mwana, keeping her safe when some baboons tried to walk through the field. Mwana became worried, raising her ears in response to the baboons. Sonje, along with trusty Kiasa and Enkesha, fended off the baboons, ensuring Mwana was in front of them as they walked around.

18 December 2023

Faraja and half of his team arrived today, followed later by Lima Lima, Alamaya, and Sonje. After a few hours, Mwashoti appeared, walking alone. As he approached Murera and Kiasa, Murera welcomed him warmly. He is still her original favourite.

Lima Lima moved towards Mwana, separating her from Enkesha and Kiasa. Eventually, Mwana dodged all her other nannies and moved towards Amali. Mwana and Amali share a special bond, as Amali treats Mwana like a sister. They play well together, and Amali is very attentive when Mwana gets scared. When returning home in the evening, Amali escorts Murera and Mwana back to their stockade, walking slowly to match Murera’s pace.

19 December 2023

Around midnight, the orphans suffered some disturbances. The Keepers heard Kapei and Maktao causing a great commotion and went to investigate. They discovered that a baboon had sought refuge within the big trees bordering the stockades. He had been chased out of his sleeping trees by a leopard. The Keepers sent the baboon on his way, so Kapei and Maktao could calm down and get some sleep. Once the baboon left, the orphans were happy again. Some went right to sleep, while others enjoyed a late-night browsing session inside their bedrooms.

In the morning, Kiombo and Maktao resumed their play fighting in front of the head girls. This escalated quickly: Maktao pushed Kiombo, causing him to tumble next to Sonje. She chased both boys away to end the fight.

20 December 2023

The orphans were very playful as they emerged from their rooms in the morning. Kapei began the day with a loud trumpet, prompting Kiombo to respond. Sonje, who was outside, moved quickly to the gate to receive Kapei and Kiombo. She initially ignored Kiombo and focused on Kapei. Then, Sonje turned her attention to Amali, who came running to her.

Sonje, along with Lima Lima and Quanza, changed the direction Murera wanted the babies to go. When they saw Murera heading in the wrong direction, Quanza whispered to Sonje, and after consultations, the nannies led the herd in a different direction. Murera eventually followed the nannies who had taken her baby with them. Mwana was happy with the chosen path, and Amali, Enkesha, Kiasa, and Mwana were also satisfied.

Mwashoti joined the herd with a wild friend, heading to the top of the hills. However, when the young wild boy saw all the big females, he moved away, leaving Mwashoti alone with his honorary sisters.

21 December 2023

Kapei seems to be growing into a young bull who doesn't always respect his older friends. Today, he attempted to push Kiombo, but Kiombo retaliated with a push, reminding Kapei that strength and respect are earned, not simply claimed. Maktao, who is good friends with Kiombo, came over to witness the situation. When Maktao saw Kapei lying down, he stepped over him, perhaps emphasising the point that Kapei needed to learn some manners.

The girls approached to inquire about the commotion, but Quanza seemed to realise it was necessary discipline for Kapei and dispersed the group. Enkesha, showing sympathy, came to Kapei's aid and helped him get back on his feet. After the incident, both Enkesha and Kapei followed Sonje and the rest of the herd into the Chyulus for more browsing. It seems that Kapei learned a valuable lesson about challenging his older companions.

22 December 2023

Kapei had a playful morning with his friend Alamaya. Alamaya, noticing Kapei digging dust from the ground, joined in and assisted him using his strong tusks. However, when Amali approached to observe their activity, Kapei — perhaps misunderstanding her intentions — stood up and tried to banish her from the scene.

When Sonje saw Kapei chasing Amali, she intervened to protect the young girl. Amali managed to dodge Kapei, sending the clumsy boy tumbling to his knees. Sensing defeat, Kapei left Amali and joined Alamaya, Enkesha, and Quanza.

Later, at the waterholes, the elephants seemed reluctant to enter the water. Keepers attempted to encourage Mwana and Amali to try wallowing, but Amali couldn't persuade Mwana, who had already tested the water and deemed it too cold. Amali, showing bravery, walked the water’s edge, heading towards Sonje and Murera.

23 December 2023

Sonje and the boys returned from the Kenzili area, bringing two wild females with babies with them. Shortly after, Zongoloni joined them, likely attracted by the presence of little babies to play with. However, when she attempted to approach the wild-born babies, she encountered resistance from their protective mothers. These wild mothers were not as accommodating as Murera is with Mwana. Faced with their defensive behaviour, Zongoloni eventually decided to leave the area and return to the Kibwezi Forest, where she knew she could find her way to Murera and Mwana.

Kiasa and Enkesha, along with little Amali, were vigilant and maintained control during this interaction.

24 December 2023

Some buffalos attempted to block the elephants' path on their way to the Umani Springs, but Lima Lima, with the assistance of Sonje and Mwashoti, successfully scared them away. The trumpeting and loud noises from the elephants caused the buffalos to retreat into the bushes, allowing the orphans to continue on their route. Murera and Amali remained close to baby Mwana and followed the encounter closely.

Upon returning from the buffalo mission, Mwashoti and Alamaya engaged in playful charging, knocking down trees and branches. Kiasa, Kiombo, and Maktao heard the commotion and decided to join in the fun. The playfulness continued with Amali and little Mwana: Amali lay down, and Mwana rolled over her until Kapei approached. Sensing that Kapei might not be friendly to the little baby, Amali stood up to protect Mwana from any potential harm.

25 December 2023

In honour of Christmas Day, the Keepers organised a special treat for the orphan herd: extra milk bottles and lucerne pellets. The elephants were surprised and delighted to receive such an unexpected feast!

After a bountiful meal, Kiombo followed Sonje into the Kibwezi Forest, where she pulled down a heavy branch to eat. Kiombo joined her, but his manners thwarted a shared meal — he ruined things by greedily pulling the branch to his side while Sonje was still eating it. Sonje stopped Kiombo and warned him to go away, so he left.

Later, Mwana came demanding milk from Sonje. The patient girl allowed her to try breastfeeding, although it was all for naught. When she realised no milk was forthcoming, Mwana left Sonje and went to her real mother, Murera, for a proper nursing session.

26 December 2023

There were many wild elephants today, by the springs and in the mud bath area. Some had little babies with them — a few who were even tinier than our little Mwana!

We saw Ziwa was among the wild visitors. When the Keepers called his name, he slowly moved towards him, along with one older female. Quanza and Sonje went to acknowledge greetings from Ziwa and his adopted mother. Meanwhile, Enkesha, Kiasa, and Amali were tasked with looking after Mwana and ensuring that she didn’t stray too close to the wild visitors.

When it was time to go back home in the evening, Amali and Kiasa led the group. It was sweet to see how the older females hung back, giving the younger girls the opportunity to showcase their leadership skills.

27 December 2023

This morning, Lima Lima, Mwashoti, Sonje, and Quanza kept the promise to come and join their friends. Before they arrived, there were telltale rumbles in the air, which made Keepers wonder what could be cooking. Before we first saw Sonje emerge from the bushes, Kiasa and Murera revealed her presence by yelling joyously. Meanwhile, Mwana and Amali stood back, quietly observing their big friends making such a big fuss. They seemed a bit worried, but Enkesha came over and reassured them that this was a happy celebration, not a bad drama.

Quanza, Kiombo, and Maktao walked away to the hills for the daylong browsing session atop the hills. Kapei and Kiombo stopped to test their energy for a bit, until Kiombo decided to join Lima Lima and Quanza beneath some trees.

28 December 2023

Playful Mwana opened her new day with a plan to play with Enkesha and Kiasa. Instead, she found herself with Maktao — who is a nice bull, but has little consideration for the baby’s diminutive size and strength. He tried to play-mount the small baby, but here Mwana had the advantage. She deftly wheeled out of the bull’s tangle of legs and moved to the safety of her nannies.

Sonje then rumbled, indicating to Murera, Lima Lima, and Quanza that she wanted them to gather round. As it turned out, she just wanted everyone to enjoy a communal browsing session. Sonje pulled down yellow fever acacia branches — her favourite — and generously shared the bark with her friends.

29 December 2023

Ziwa and his adopted family came this morning and had some water from the trough outside the stockades. When Ziwa moved to have some time with Quanza and Sonje, who he clearly missed, his wild family clustered around him and tried to encourage him to leave. Ziwa gave up and followed them to the Umani Springs, where they continued off into the forest.

Amali and Kiasa watched over Mwana as she took little naps between the rocks. She really enjoyed the cool shade, secure in the knowledge that her nannies were looking after her. Amali is just a little girl herself, but she remained vigilantly on guard, just to be sure that the baby was very safe from anything that could disrupt her sleep.

In the end, it was Murera who instilled some motherly discipline. After she decided Mwana had napped enough, she woke her up, so that everyone could move on together. The baby moved with the herd, but surrounded by tight security from her young nannies.

30 December 2023

Since Christmas Day, a good number of orphans have come back home to celebrate with Murera and her team. Lima Lima, Sonje, Mwashoti, and Sonje join the orphans at first light and only separate in the evenings, when the nightclubbers disappear into the forest.

This evening, Kiombo was misled by Mwashoti, who wanted him to join him out in the forest for the night. Kiombo also wanted to test his adolescent independence, but as the night got darker, he became afraid and decided to turn home. When he ambled into the stockades, all the dependent orphans issued a chorus of rumbles, asking where he had been and why he was arriving so late. Enkesha extended her trunk between their gate, just to make sure her friend was back.

Lima Lima was not quite ready to give up and came back to see if Kiombo had changed his mind. Alas, Kiombo was already in his room. In fact, he returned to find his neighbour, Kiasa, blatantly stealing his greens. Kiombo strongly defended his greens, but Kiasa was undeterred and insisted upon pulling more greens over to her side.

31 December 2023

Mwana accidentally hurt Murera while nursing this morning, pulling too hard on her breast. To teach her daughter a lesson, Murera blocked her from nursing more, which caused Mwana to yell in displeasure. All her nannies rushed over in a flash. Enkesha, Lima Lima, and Quanza arrived, only to find Murera completely unperturbed by her daughter’s tantrum. Enkesha took Mwana away, but the little girl was in a real huff. After a short while, she returned to Murera and continued nursing — but this time, she was much better behaved. Sometimes, difficult lessons must be learned.

Faraja and some of his wild friends came from the Chyulus. However, his friends were leery of the orphans and Keepers. They raised their trunks aloft in order to determine where the Keepers were. Once they realised their location, they walked out to Kenzili.

Out in the bush, the orphans encountered a few klipspringers. Unable to resist causing a ruckus, the elephants blew loud trumpets, delighting as the agile little antelope leapt across the lava rocks. It was fun to see the klipspringer running on the sharp stones with such ease — this is not something elephants would ever be able to do.
