13 June 1999

The 13th was spent with various different wild herds down at the river. Mmeanwhile Emily and Aitong remain with little "Mweiga" within the Headquarter electric fence and close to the Stockades, since Mweiga needs milk every 3 hours. (Daphne's comment:- this calf was not thriving on the Israeli Milk Replacer we normally use for the Tsavo elephants, since SMA is heat sensitive and does not keep in that climate. This was a puzzle until we went into the formula more closely and found that it was, in fact, different to what we had previously used, containing antibiotic. Small wonder Mweiga was not thriving. Pure Skim milk powder was sourced, with great difficulty, and since then she has forged ahead).
