Emergency Tooth Extraction for a Tsavo Lioness

Published on the 29th of September, 2025

Lions may be apex predators, but life at the top of the food chain isn't easy.

Today, the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit helped a lioness with a serious injury to her lower jaw. The lower left canine tooth had become partially dislodged, likely in the process of trying to make a kill. After Dr Limo extracted the tooth, which was unsalvageable, the team cleaned the wound and then administered painkillers and antibiotics to aid healing.

Treatment complete, the patient was revived in a much better state. She went to rejoin her pride and, thanks to speedy intervention, is expected to make a complete recovery. While it is certainly not ideal to be down a canine tooth, she will still be a formidable predator.
