Remembering Dame Daphne Sheldrick on Her Birthday

Published on the 4th of June, 2026

92 years ago, our founder and matriarch was born. In honour of Daphne Sheldrick's birthday, Angela reflects upon her mother and the legacy she created.

Today would have been Daphne Sheldrick’s 92nd birthday. My mother never set out to be a titan of conservation. She began Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to continue my late father’s vision, guided by a love for all wild creatures and a desire to make a better world for them. She weathered so many challenges in her time, but remained unwaveringly true to herself and her beliefs.

Building success on success, never straying from this mission, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has grown into the far-reaching, multi-faceted conservation organisation we are today. I know Daphne and David would be so proud of all we have achieved.

It has been eight years since Daphne left us, but she remains in the forefront of our minds. She was an unassuming woman who achieved so much just by pursuing her passion for animals and the natural world.

Daphne always said, “You reap what you sow” — and my goodness, what has been sown over the years.
