In the month of June a high number of snares were recovered by the DSWT Anti-Poaching Units operating within the Tsavo Conservation Area. 461 snares were recovered in total with Meru finding 241 snares of varying sizes, most of which were set to trap small animals such as dikdik for bush-meat. A further 14 snares were confiscated from poachers by the Mtito team before they could be set.
It was a busy month for the teams as they made 66 arrests including 9 bush-meat poachers and 2 ivory poachers. Other arrests made included woodcarving, logging and livestock herding within the Parks and protected areas. 15 charcoal kilns were destroyed as well as 4 poacher's hideouts and 2 shooting blinds.
Other notable incidences included the recovery of ivory from a poached elephant, which was discovered by the DSWT Aerial Unit, finding an elephant carcass with tusks already removed and supporting the KWS/DSWT Tsavo Vet Unit in a buffalo and two elephant veterinary treatments.
