Suguta
Mutara’s group, consisting of Mutara, Mambo, Suguta, Sities, Turkwel, Malkia, Sana Sana, Naboishu, and Kainuk, visited the stockade to surprise us for the New Year. The group had been away for a very long time. Later, Barsilinga, Yatta, Yoyo, Yogi, Galla, Sapalan, Nasalot, Nusu, and Noah also came to say hi for the New Year. Mambo was so happy to meet the orphans and expressed it by engaging Lodo, Vaarti, and Mayan in a light pushing game. Turkwel exchanged greetings with Barsilinga and later with Sapalan. Olorien had a brief interaction with Naboishu.
Shortly thereafter, the orphans left for browsing, leaving the ex-orphans at the stockade compound. Olorien, Larro, and Mukkoka had lagged behind with the ex-orphans, but the keepers took them to join their colleagues. Kinyei settled to browse with Bondeni, while Kindani teamed up with Olorien. At eleven o'clock in the morning, Roho led the first group to the mud bath. Mutara’s group also showed up at the mud bath briefly before heading northwest of the mud bath. The orphans had their milk, then wallowed, and thereafter returned to the browsing field.
The orphans had a quiet afternoon as they concentrated more on browsing, with no major observations.
Wendi, Wema, Wimbi, Wiva, Wanjala, Galana, Gawa, Gala, Siku, Zurura, and two wild elephants were at the stockade compound when the orphans were let out. Wema tried to bully Vaarti, but Kuishi intervened, warning Wema to keep away from Vaarti. Kinyei had a brief interaction with Gala before stepping aside, allowing Vaarti and Mayan to take over. Mayan was the first to engage Gala in a light pushing game, and later, Vaarti joined in to play with Gala.
Kuishi challenged Wanjala in a pushing game, while Sattao played with Gawa. Later, Naleku led the orphans to the browsing field. A wild bull followed the group, occasionally charging at the orphans and the keepers. The wild bull eventually left when the keepers climbed onto rocks for safety.
The orphans settled to browse in the Kone area and browsed peacefully until eleven o'clock in the morning, when Olorien led the first group to the mud bath. The sky remained cloudy, and the temperatures were moderate. After taking their milk, only Lodo, Kindani, Roho, Suguroi, Mukkoka, and Kinyei participated fully in wallowing. A wild teenager emerged from the northern side and joined the six orphans in the water.
Lodo engaged Roho in a strength-testing exercise while still in the water, while the rest of the orphans opted for a soil-bathing session. In the afternoon, the orphans browsed west of Ithumba Hill. Bondeni engaged Roho in a pushing game, while Vaarti played with his friend Mayan.
In the evening, the orphans returned safely to the stockade.
It was a quiet morning. No ex-orphans or wild elephants showed up to share lucerne with the orphans. The orphans had all the freedom they needed, as there was no one to compete with or push them around. Mayan and Vaarti settled to scratch on their usual rock, while Roho and Suguroi engaged in a game of sitting and raising their trunks. Esoit and Mukkoka gently pushed Mayan and Vaarti off the rock to enjoy scratching their bellies in turn.
When the orphans had enough lucerne, Naleku led the way to the browsing field. The orphans settled to browse in the Kone area and browsed calmly until mud bath time, when Vaarti led the first group to the mud bath. The temperatures were moderate, and only Roho, Suguroi, Lodo, Kindani, Kuishi, Larro, and Esoit participated in wallowing. Lodo and Roho had a strength-testing game while still in the water, which ended in a draw. Kuishi, Larro, and Esoit were the last to leave the wallow.
The rest of the group only washed their feet before heading for a soil-dusting session. In the afternoon, the orphans settled to browse west of Ithumba Hill. Kuishi developed an itchy ear and found a suitable tree to scratch against.
In the evening, the orphans returned safely to the stockade.
Tumaren, Tembo, Naseku, Esambu, Chaimu, and Ishanga joined the orphans for lucerne feeding in the morning. At eleven o'clock, Olorien led Naleku and Suguroi in the first group, while Mayan led Vaarti and Lodo in the second group. The orphans had their milk and walked toward the mud bath.
The weather was chilly, and the orphans boycotted the wallowing exercise, except for Roho, Lodo, Kindani, and Suguroi, who participated fully. Larro chose a soil-dusting exercise while her colleagues headed straight back to the browsing field.
In the afternoon, the orphans settled to browse in the Kanziku area. Kuishi, as usual, browsed with her younger brother Esoit, while the rest of the group scattered across the area, enjoying the lush vegetation.
In the evening, Mayan led the way back to the stockade.
It was a quiet morning. Only the orphans were present at the lucerne feeding time. The orphans didn't stay for long as Vaarti, Kuishi, and Esoit walked to the water trough and started rumbling, calling their colleagues to leave for browsing before the green vegetation starts to lose its lushness. Indeed, many trees have started changing colour from green to brown, an indication that the rain is no more and the dry period is beckoning.
Roho had a brief strength-testing exercise with Esoit while Olorien and Bondeni lagged behind, trying to pick the best out of the lucerne. The two orphans left later to catch up with their colleagues. Lodo had a brief meeting with Mayan as Mukkoka teamed up with Sattao. Tumaren, Tembo, Naseku, Chaimu, Maramoja, and Esampu passed a distance away from where the orphans were feeding and didn't bother to come close. Kuishi, Larro, Kindani, and Naleku just raised their trunks up as if waving while sending greetings to the ex-orphans.
The orphans settled to browse north of Kalovoto, and at eleven o'clock in the morning, Vaarti led the way for the noon bottle feeds. After getting their milk, the orphans only washed their feet because the weather was chilly and the water was cold. The orphans had a brief soil-dusting exercise before returning to the browsing field.

The remaining part of the day was quiet as the orphans concentrated more on browsing without any major observation. In the evening, the orphans returned safely to the stockade for yet another night.
The orphans settled briefly for lucerne soon after leaving the stockade. Naleku led the group to the browsing field, but the Keepers brought them back since the light was not good enough for them to start walking in the bush. The orphans spent more time at the stockade compound until the light was good enough to start wandering off to the bush.
Mayan kept himself busy by playing with Bondeni, while Sattao played with Roho. Mukkoka settled to scratch his belly on a nearby rock as Olorien had a brief talk with Kindani. The orphans settled to browse at the Kone area, where Sattao competed with Kuishi over who between them could reach the highest leaves on a tree. Lodo settled to browse with Olorien and later took a break to engage Roho in a strength-testing exercise.
Mayan came across a nice rock that he used to scratch against as Vaarti started the journey of heading for his noon bottle feeds. The temperatures were moderate. The orphans had their milk and thereafter skipped the wallowing exercise, settling for a soil-dusting exercise.
In the afternoon, the orphans settled to browse east of Ithumba Hill and came across mud that they used to have fun in. Bondeni settled to browse with Mayan and later took a break to relax under a tree until the temperatures dropped to a favourable level. In the evening, Kinyei led the way back to the stockade.
Kibo was at the stockade compound early in the morning. The orphans were let out soon after taking their morning milk and joined Kibo outside. Shortly after, Chyulu arrived with her two babies, Cheka and Charli. The naughty Kibo started harassing Chyulu and even drove her and the kids away from the lucerne feeding area.
Enkikwe and his friend Sapalan arrived and joined the orphans in feeding on lucerne. Kuishi had a brief pushing game with Sapalan while Vaarti and Mayan settled at their usual rock for scratching. An hour later, Sapalan and Enkikwe escorted the orphans to the browsing field.
The orphans settled to browse at Kone area. At the browsing field, the orphans were joined by Zurura, Kitirua, Naserian, Njema, Oltaiyoni, Kandecha, Kalama, Melia, and Milo. Half an hour later, the ex-orphans left for an undisclosed location.

Nasalot, Nusu, Noah, and Mundusi emerged from the northern side of the mud bath. Mundusi, Noah, and Nusu joined the orphans in wallowing while Nasalot waited outside for the young boys to enjoy themselves.
When the orphans had enough of wallowing, Suguroi led the way out, leaving Nasalot's sons and Mundusi still wallowing.

At eleven o'clock in the morning, Kinyei led the first group to the mud bath. The orphans had their milk and then headed for wallowing, where they were joined by Zurura. When the orphans had enough of wallowing, Suguroi led the way out of the water. Roho and Lodo stayed back in the water, having a pushing game, while Zurura continued to enjoy his cooling-off exercise.
Finally, Roho and Lodo finished wallowing and playing, and bid goodbye to Zurura. The orphans then had a soil dusting exercise before returning to the browsing field. They settled to browse in the Kanziku area and, in the evening, returned safely to the stockade.

The orphans left the stockade early as usual, soon after taking their morning milk. They settled for lucerne and appeared calm. Kindani walked to a nearby rock and scratched her belly. It was the day new babies were to be transported from Nairobi to Ithumba.
After feeding on lucerne, the orphans settled to browse just a few meters west of the Ithumba stockade. Shortly before nine o'clock in the morning, Olare, Ola, Ndiwa, Nabulu, and Olsekki joined the orphans briefly. It's amazing how they seemed to know that new babies were arriving at Ithumba, arriving at nearly the exact time the truck was due.
At nine o'clock, the truck carrying Mukutan, Choka, and Loldaiga arrived. The three babies were offloaded and walked to the water trough. Olare, Ola, Nabulu, Olsekki, and Ndiwa arrived just in time to welcome the new arrivals. Mayan and Vaarti followed closely behind to catch a glimpse of the newcomers. Nabulu greeted Loldaiga and Mukutan. Mayan looked agitated upon meeting the new arrivals, knowing that he would no longer be considered a baby and would be moved to Group Two, meaning he would no longer be in the first group to return for the evening milk.
All the orphans gathered to meet the three new babies. Esoit went to greet Choka, but Choka ignored him. Loldaiga challenged Sattao and later moved on to play with Olorien. After some time interacting with the orphans, Loldaiga, followed by Mukutan, started walking west, accompanied by everyone present. The orphans took their new friends to Kone Dam, where they enjoyed a cooling-off exercise before heading to the main mud bath. Ndiwa escorted the new babies all the way to the mud bath.
The sun was hot, and immediately after getting their milk, all the orphans participated in wallowing, followed by a soil bathing exercise. Ndiwa had a brief meeting with Loldaiga before letting him go to catch up with his colleagues.

Mukutan, Choka, and Loldaiga had their milk at six o'clock in the morning. After the gates opened, the three new boys were unsure which way to go. Naleku, Larro, Roho, and Kindani entered their stockade to enjoy the leftover branches before leading the newcomers to the lucerne feeding area. Naleku briefly interacted with Choka before settling to feed on lucerne. Vaarti kindly shared his lucerne with Mukutan and Loldaiga, while Suguroi briefly joined Choka but left when Choka protested.
A short while later, Mukutan, Choka, and Loldaiga visited the stockade water trough for a drink before being guided to the browsing fields. The orphans settled to browse at Kone, near Kone Dam, to allow the new boys to cool off if the temperatures became too high. Esoit engaged Kindani in a light pushing game before moving on to play with Roho. Kuishi, Sattao, and Mukkoka, who had spent the night out, rejoined the orphans at Kone Dam.

Loldaiga, who is more confident, led the way out. The orphans settled for lucerne and shortly later were joined by Olare, Ola, Olsekki, Ndiwa, Nabulu, Tusuja, and a wild bull. Ola settled to scratch on a nearby rock. Choka walked to Ola and engaged her in a light pushing game. Ola didn't feel comfortable and so walked to her mother. Choka followed Ola, but Ola whipped Choka with her trunk. This was to warn Choka against bullying her baby. Choka walked away and called his two friends, Mukutan and Loldaiga, to go and drink water.
Sunyei arrived with her baby, Saba. Following them were two bulls who appeared to be interested in Sunyei. Loldaiga tried to block Saba, who had come to join them in drinking water. Saba couldn't understand where this boy had come from since she had not experienced such a thing before from the orphans. Saba decided not to engage in any form of trouble with Loldaiga and walked away to join her mother.
Later, Kuishi led the way to the browsing field. The orphans settled to browse at Kone area. The orphans browsed calmly until mud bath time, when Kinyei led the first group to the mud bath. As Dololo was walking in reverse, trying to make Mambo happy, he thought the water trough was a bit far. Dololo realised too late when he accidentally dropped into the water trough, causing panic amongst the ex-orphans. The loud sound of his fall made all the ex-orphans run to check what was happening. Mambo ran in the opposite direction as he had seen what had happened. Dololo composed himself, stood up, then stepped out of the water trough walking like a gentleman and didn’t engage Mambo in a pushing game anymore.
The orphans had their milk at six o’clock in the morning, then walked out to join the ex-orphans. Mambo tried his antics on the no-nonsense Suguroi. Suguroi pinched Mambo by squeezing his trunk. Mutara turned and started chasing Choka away, with Mambo following happily. The Keepers intervened by calling Mutara to stop her nonsense of fighting the young.
