Wild-Born Babies

Elephants and black rhinos born to orphans we have rescued, raised, and rewilded.

The greatest testament to the success of our Orphans’ Project is what happens after the orphans return to the wild. Once grown, the elephants and rhinos we hand-raised go on to have wild-born young of their own. Saving a single orphan can help shape the future of an entire species.

To date, over 100 confirmed elephant calves and grandcalves have been born to orphans rescued, raised, and rewilded through our Orphans’ Project, along with several black rhino calves. We know them because their mothers, though fully wild themselves, still return 'home' to introduce their offspring to the people who raised them. There will be many more out there, including those fathered by male ex-orphans. Every wild-born baby began with an orphan given a second chance.
